2008 Captains selected
David Bothwell, Dan Reichert and Phil Wessberg were selected by their peers as captains for the 2008 season. All 2007 JV and Varsity players voted for up to 3 people to represent the Mustangs as captains for the 2008 season.
Leadership is earned; it is not granted. This applies to captains – they must now earn that role. This applies to all others - there is no limit on the number of leaders; the 2007 senior class provided a great example of that.

Batting Cage at Mounds View High School Completed
Thanks to Ray Brooker and his friends, a new batting cage has been constructed on the athletic practice fields behind the High School. Along with a batting practice "turtle," some throw down bases, and a portable mound, this batting cage provides the opportunity for any of the high school teams to conduct a practice at the High School on days when fields are not available for practice. The net was donated to the school, and Ray Brooker led the project with some friends to construct and install a frame to hold the cage in place. Ray has been volunteering his time to Mounds View High School athletics for over 20 years. Coach Downey said, "I have a quote on my desk at home that says, 'Give of your gifts for free and expect nothing in return.' That pretty much defines Ray Brooker." There are many Ray Brooker stories - one from former Mounds View Baseball Coach Chris Schwartz: "Our 2000 team was practicing at Midway Stadium in preparation for our apparance that year in the State Tournament. During BP on the field, all of a sudden I notice Ray out in the infield kneeling down in various spots and digging his fingers into the infield dirt, seemingly oblivious to the baseballs flying all over the field. I guess when you're a WWII veteran, a few baseballs screaming by are no big deal, and I just assumed maybe Ray had finally lost it. The next day, I learned what he was doing - Ray spent the entire day grooming our field's infield dirt to be the exactly the same as Midway's - thus, we would practice that day on an infield exactly like that which we would be playing on in the state tournament."

Teams Finalized
Final cuts were made after practice today, Wednesday.
We have a Varsity team of 28 players. Some players will exclusively play varsity games. Some will likely play exclusively JV games. And, some will play in both varsity and JV games. All of the 28 are eligible to play in a varsity game as the opportunity is available and earned. The sophomore team consists of 14 players; all sophomores. There are 2 sophomores continuing to tryout for the remainder of the week. The Freshman team consists of 14 players.
Eighty (80) students participated in the tryout process. Cutting players that really want to be a part of the baseball program is obviously extremely difficult, most significantly for the students and their families. A couple of messages have been emphasized with the players:
1) Playing time is earned.
2) Obviously, this is a time when those students that are cut need the support of their friends the most.
The schedule for the remainder of the Week:
Thursday: Practice 4:00PM – 6:15PM @ MVHS
Friday: Practice 4:00PM – 6:15PM @ MVHS
Saturday: Spring Break Vacation Players Meeting - 9:00AM
Optional Practice Time 9:45AM – 12:00PM **
Monday:
Tuesday: Practice at respective fields – 2:45PM – 4:45PM
Pictures: McCullough–SO/FR (4:15PM)
Kohler–V (5:00PM)
Beginning Monday, the Daily Run bus from MVHS to McCullough for Sophomores and Freshmen will begin. It leaves MVHS at 2:20PM. Parents are required to pick-up these players after practice; there is no bus back to MVHS.
In addition to the uniforms that are provided on Friday, players may purchase a baseball cap, mock-turtleneck, and green socks. If a player has any of these that are in good condition from last year, they do NOT need to purchase new items. Cash or a check to “MVHS Baseball” are both fine. These items will be sold on Friday. The cost for the items:
Baseball Cap: $13
Mock-T: $13
Socks: $ 4

Practice/Tryout Update From Coach Downey
At the end of the Spring Break week, we have had seven (7) practices; ten (10) for Freshmen.
As coaches, we feel we were able to provide the players with a lot of good reps with an emphasis on individual skills and fundamentals to provide a good base going into the season. This coming week, we will continue to emphasize individual skills, and begin to work on team defense and team offense.
Eighty (80) students are trying out for roughly 56 spots. After the first week of Freshmen tryouts, 5 were cut. At the end of the Spring Break practices, 12 additional players were cut, and one individual opted not to continue with the tryout process. Nine (9) students not present for the Spring Break practices will be given the opportunity to tryout this week. Including those nine (9) students, there are sixty-two (62) students practicing this week; requiring more cuts.
We would obviously like to get on the baseball fields for practice this week as soon as possible. Barring significant rain, we should be able to shortly. We are TENTATIVLEY scheduled to practice at MVHS on Monday, March 26th at 4:00PM (everyone - both Group 1 and Group 2). We have asked the players to check the Baseball Bulletin Board on Monday morning for confirmation of the Monday practice plans, and this confirmation will also be posted here on the website as well. Hopefully, we can get on the fields by Tuesday.
Final cuts and team selections will be made on Thursday this week, and uniforms will be distributed on Friday. We plan to practice on Saturday, and everyone will scrimmage
Cutting players that really want to be a part of the baseball program is obviously extremely difficult, most significantly for the students and their families. A couple of messages have been emphasized with the players:
1) No one has made a team yet; tryouts continue this week.
2) Obviously, this is a time when those students that are cut need the support of their friends the most.
Please feel free to contact me if there are any questions.

METRODOME PRACTICE
If parents are interested in watching the players practice at the Metrodome Monday, you are welcome to do so. You can park in the lot adjacent to the Metrodome on the east side of the Metrodome. If there is a guard at the entrance to the lot, simply tell them you are there for Mounds View Baseball. You can then enter through Gate D right there by the lot.

Diamond Club Dinner / Silent Auction a Huge Success
Over 140 people attended the Dinner and Silent Auction at Kozlak's Sunday night. Athletic Director Bob Madison spoke about the tremendous strength and support that exists in the Mounds View community, and Coach Downey spoke about some of his goals and the importance of building on the Mustang pride that currently exists at Mounds View High School. Twins Broadcaster John Gordon then entertained people with stories and answered questions from those in attendance. Event Committee Chairman Randy Reichert stated that he hoped this year's success could be a springboard for this becoming an annual event.
