Coaching Staff

Mark Downey:  2008 is Coach Downey's second season at Mounds View High School - he is the Varsity Head Coach and is responsible for the overall baseball program.  He also does some athletic contest site management for Mounds View.  He came to Mounds View from St. Olaf College where he was an Assistant Baseball Coach and Recruiting Coordinator.  Downey is a graduate of Edina East High School and UW-Eau Claire.  In the summer, Downey coaches a Mounds View VFW team and he plays Over-35 baseball.  Downey is an instructor for the Minnesota Twins Clinics and also does private lessons.  He and his wife Marguerite reside in Apple Valley, daughter Erin attends UW-Eau Claire, and son Joe attends Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Scott Courtright:  2008 is Coach Courtright's second season at Mounds View High School - he will coach the Junior Varsity team.  He has coached various youth and high school baseball players in Apple Valley.  He is a graduate of Harding High School and attended Bemidji State University.  He and his wife Amy reside in Apple Valley, daughter Candice resides in Burnsville, and son Cam is a student at UMD.

Tim Flaherty: 2008 is Coach Flaherty's first season at Mounds View High School coaching baseball - he will be the Freshman Head Coach.  Flaherty is currently in the Electrical Construction and Maintenance Program at Dunwoody College of Technology, and will graduate this spring.  He is a 2005 graduate of MVHS, where he was captain of both the football and baseball teams as a senior.  He was named All-Conference and Most Dedicated in football, and MVP of the Tri-City Red baseball team.  Flaherty resides in Shoreview.

Aaron Moberg: 2008 is Coach Moberg's first season at Mounds View High School coaching baseball - he will be an Assistant Coach.  Moberg is an Assistant Coach for the South St. Paul Girls Hockey Team, and he works as a Site Manager for Mounds View athletic contests.   Moberg was the nose guard on the Bethel football team that advanced to the NCAA Division III National Championship Semifinals, and will graduate with a degree in Education from Bethel University in the spring of 2008.  He is a 2003 MVHS graduate, and he lives in Arden Hills.

Jon Nuss:  2008 will be Coach Nuss' fourth season at Mounds View High School - he will be the Varsity Assistant Coach, and he also acts as the program's pitching coach.  Nuss teaches Economics and U.S. History at Mounds View High School.  He is an instructor for the Minnesota Twins Clinics and did private lessons for several years in Burnsville.  Nuss is a graduate of Bloomington Jefferson High School and Bethel University, and is currently a Graduate Student at Bethel University.  He played college baseball at the University of Minnesota for two years where he lettered in 1999, and at Bethel University for two years where he was a MIAC Player of the Week in 2000.  Nuss was a three-sport athlete and All-State baseball player at Jefferson High School.  He and his wife Kelly reside in Forest Lake with their daughter Chloe.

Cardell Poe: 2008 is Coach Poe's second season at Mounds View High School - he will be the Freshman Assistant Coach.  He is a graduate of St. Paul Johnson High School, and he currently plays baseball for the St. Paul Highland Park amatuer team. Poe is a student at the University of Minnesota, and will graduate in May, 2008 with a Kinesiology major and a Coaching minor.  He resides in St. Paul.

Brian Sprout: 2008 is Coach Sprout's second season at Mounds View High School - he will be a roving coach for all teams.  He acts as a substitute teacher for several school districts in the metro area.  Sprout is a graduate of Lake City High School and St. Olaf College.  He played two plus years in the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system, and currently plays for the St. Paul Saints.  He was a three time Conference Player of the Year while at St. Olaf, and in a 2002 St. Olaf game, he hit for a race cycle - a solo home run, a 2-run homer, a 3-run homer and a grand slam.  Sprout teaches hitting at Blue Chip Academy in Burnsville, and was previously an Assistant Coach at Edina High School.  He and his wife Lynn reside in Woodbury.

Ryan Wahlund: 2008 is Coach Wahlund's first season coaching Baseball at Mounds View High School - he will be the assistant sophomore coach.  During the day he also works at Mounds View High School as a Behavior Manager Para for the STEPS program.  Wahlund is a 2003 grad of Mounds View, where he lettered in football and threw shot-put and discus for track.  He played baseball in the summer for Babe Ruth and Tri-City.  Wahlund went on to Bethel University, where he graduated in 2006, and now is enrolled at William Mitchell College of Law for the fall of 2008.  He resides in Lakeville with his wife Amanda.

Jon Walsh: 2008 is Coach Walsh's sixth season at Mounds View High School - he will coach the Sophomore Team.  Walsh is a graduate of Mounds View High School.  Jon played on the same team with Joe Mauer at Cretin-Derham Hall - their respective baseball playing careers took different paths from that point...  He is employed as a Special Education Para at Mounds View High School, and is also finishing up a Bachelor's degree in psychology from Bethel University.  Walsh has coached for five years in the Tri-City summer baseball program, coaching Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth teams for 2 years each, and this past summer coaching the 16-Year Old Team which finished Runner-Up in the VFW State Tournament.  He and his wife Shannon reside in White Bear Lake.
