Diamond Club Minutes

Diamond Club Meeting

October 2, 2006

Members Present:   Jerry Walen, Craig Dickison, Randy Reichert,  Mike Blumer, Mary Anne Marshik,  Al Barkve, Mark Rosin, Bob Freed, Dorothy Pedersen,  Jim Szymanski,  Coach Mark Downey, Assistant Coach Nuss, Jim Anderson, Kevin Kubitschek, Rown Roman, Ken Porten, Mark Anderson, Bob Harris.

Treasurer’s Report:

Jon Hoffman was unable to attend tonight’s meeting, but submitted the following:

We currently have approximately $2,500 in the Club checkbook.  Fundraising last year from the Pizza Pal card sales, salt sales, and Program advertising was approx. $25,000.  If we can fundraise at that level again, we should be able to cover all of our expenses, and leave $1,000 to 2,000 in the account at year end.

Old Business:

By laws:  we will discuss and vote on at a later meeting to give everyone a chance to read through them.

Spring Break trip:  After talking with most of the players over the last few days, Coach Downey feels the Seniors are not especially enthusiastic about a trip this year, although the Juniors and Sophomores seem interested.  At minimum, he would like to see us at a different facility, such as Bethel or Augsburg, since their spring break is the same as ours.  The Metrodome could be rented for $400 an hour, and has Tuesday and Wednesday openings the week of our break.   Other options would be to take the players to Arizona (approx. $700-800 per player vs. $1,000 for a Florida trip), or Missouri (unstable weather could dampen the entire week if it’s cold).  Jerry Walen moved to pursue spring break options this year in the local area; Ken Porten seconded the motion, which was carried by an 11 to 2 vote.  Bob Freed will come back to the group with out of town options next month for spring break next year.

New Business:

Wish List:  Coach Downey presented his summary of expenses and wishes for the 2006-2007 year, with three cost options.  The increasing costs where primarily from funding more than one coach for each team. Not included in this year’s budget but on the wish list:  a radar gun; jackets for the players; a flag at Kohler Park; a scoreboard at Kohler Park, and additional batting and pitching cage at Kohler.

A motion was made and seconded to approve funding for option 2, with the possibility of funding option one if fundraising is more successful this year.  The motion carried unanimously.

Committee Chairs:

The following members volunteered to head up respective committees:

Year End Banquet (to include all ages):  Mary Anne Marshik and Dorothy Pedersen

Section Program Advertising:  Mark Anderson and Al Barkve

Captain’s practices and off-season training:  Craig Dickison and Bob Freed

Game Day experience (includes parent’s day, senior day, maximizing attendance, school publicity, cable TV coverage, media coverage, programs, etc):  Jerry Walen and Jon Hoffman

Grocery bagging at Cub:  Mark Rosin and Randy Reichert

Pizza Pal cards:  Jerry Walen

Salt:  Mark Rosin and Al Barkve

Silent auction/Dinner at Kozlaks:  Randy Reichert and Bob Harris

Apparel and logos:  Mary Anne Marshik and Jim Symanski

Rawn Roman was selected as Freshman team representative.  We need a Sophomore team representative.

Other fundraisers  suggested for consideration:  hosting a freshman or sophomore tournament; outfield fence advertising; and Coach conducted youth clinics.

Coach’s Update:

Coach Downey would like to play a game vs. Irondale this year, and perhaps have a Shoreview Area Youth Baseball day or kid’s free admission day at the game.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:35 pm.

The next regular Diamond Club meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 7, from 7:00 to 8:30 in the Mounds View Form.

Your attendance is welcome and highly encouraged!
