May 1, 2007

Members Present:   Jeff Kurkowski, Karin Wessberg, Bob Freed, Allen Barkve, Sally McCarville, John Hoffman, Bob Harris, Jim Marshik, Jeff Hershey, Ben Gallagher, Jerry Walen, Coach Mark Downey

Minutes from April  meeting:

Approved as written.

Treasurer’s Report:

John distributed a budget.  Pizza Pals coupons have been paid in full.  Anticipate revenue of $5000 or so to still come in.  Expenses are reflected in the budget, but not revenue.  There are still some coaching and umpiring reimbursements to be paid out in June.  John expects that we will have a balance between $6-7000 going into the summer.

Old Business:

Player Apparel:   Most, but not all, apparel is in.  Coach Downey plans to re-evaluate the choice of vendor for next year.  There are quite a number of hats available, some with the adjustable, plastic strap, others that are flex-fit.  Downey indicated that they could be brought to the varsity games to be sold or raffled off.

Pizza Pals:  Players need to return their money by May 11.  Jerry Walen has turned in the money he’s received.  500 coupons were purchased and have all been accounted for.  Jerry will inventory all of this and turn it over to the treasurer.  In the end, $5,500 should be received (500 coupons x $11/coupon).

Section Programs:  Allen Barkve met with Michelle and Dennis at Image Printing.  They want a little more prep work.  Programs need to go to print May 14-16.  We have until May 12 to post team rosters/photos on the MSHSL website.  Mark Anderson will give a last thrust to ad sales this week and next.  The latest push generated another $600-1000 in revenue.  75% of  advertisers repeat from other years.  Program cost to print $1500 (500 programs x $3/program).  Will be available for sale at the games for $1.00.

Game Day Experience:  Someone in the Kohler Park neighborhood, across County Rd F, has complained about the game day music.  Would like to have a hot dog give-away at next week’s game with Cretin, May 9.  Jeff Kurkowski has offered to coordinate the food and can get the hot dogs.  Bob Harris volunteered to cook and to bring his grill.  Randy Reichert will also help.  It was suggested that practice for the other teams be cut short and the players be encouraged to attend the game.  Also, this Friday, May 4, is a cookout for the Sophmore team.  John Hoffman will announce the game.  A cookout for the Freshman team is scheduled for May 15; the game has been moved to Kohler.

John Hoffman spoke briefly about the year book supplement.  He has been working with a couple of students.  The latest offering from the students needs to be reviewed.  John hasn’t been impressed with what they’ve done thus far.  The question as to how to proceed was brought up.  There is $400 budgeted for this.  Bob Harris wondered if Kinko’s or Office Depot couldn’t take this on.  He’ll look into it w/Kinko’s to find out what they’d need.

End of Year Banquet:   May 23rd is the date for the banquet to be held at Jimmy’s, from 6-8:30 PM.  The cost to players and family will be $15/person, with the additional amount owing to be paid by the Diamond Club.  There will be a microphone available.  It was determined that invitations should be extended to the students who have announced the Varsity games, as well as players’ extended family.

Coach’s Report:  Fliers have been distributed to the players for “Summer Fun at the Sandlot”.  The intent is to give kids the opportunity to get in 2000 swings this summer.  Coach Downey is looking for help with what to give the seniors.  The Sectional tournament is double-elimination, with games to be held in Coon Rapids, White Bear Township, and Blaine.

New Business:  Randy Reichert brought up a discussion he had with Nick Tamale, an employee for the school district, regarding new fields on the TCAAP site.  He encouraged all who reside in Arden Hills to attend the City Council meeting in June.  Coach Downey expressed his thoughts that McCullough would be a great option for a new high school home field.  Others discouraged this, saying that it had been looked into in the past.

Randy Reichert mentioned that May 24 would be another opportunity to bag groceries at Cub Foods from 3-9 PM.  However, that is the first day of sectionals.  Jerry Walen  suggested that Cub be called back, thanking them, but letting them know that May 24 is not a good day for us.

Ben Gallagher made a motion to adjourn the meeting; Jeff Kurkowski seconded his motion.

The next regular Diamond Club meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 5, from 7:00 to 8:30 in the Mounds View Forum.

Your attendance is welcome and highly encouraged!
