Diamond Club Meeting

December 4, 2007

Members present:  Ben Gallagher, Dan Nickols, Marquetta Nickols, Mike Blumer, Mark Tallarico, Joe Bothwell, Dean Wikstrom, Jeff Hershey, Jim Szymanski, Allen Barkve, Coach Downey, and Karin Wessberg.

Meeting called to order at 7:08 by Randy Reichert

Minutes from November  meeting:

Jennifer Dickison made a motion to accept the November minutes; Jeff Hershey seconded the motion.

Treasurer’s Report:

Randy Reichert, on John Hoffman’s behalf, reported the only budget update as the change in spring training rental from $1000 to $800.  At this point, there is no income coming in.

Coach Downey’s update:

The following items were shared by Coach Downey:  SAYB meeting, off season conditioning, youth baseball clinic, high school baseball field, and mandatory meeting in March.

SAYB meeting

Coach Downey is following up with SAYB’s intention to sponsor summer ball for 16-18 year olds and has a meeting scheduled for December 5 with Mike Anderson, SAYB president, and Irondale coach, Chris Fink.

Off season conditioning

Off season conditioning is optional, but coaches cannot lead any workout.  About 25 kids showed up last week and were given handouts on conditioning workouts.  Captains are working with Bob Madison to schedule practices beginning in January.

Youth baseball clinic

A clinic for ages 9-14 is planned for March 1st and 2nd.  Sign-up will be through Community Education.  More information will be communicated shortly.

            MVHS baseball field

School board members and District administration believe that having a field on campus would best suit our needs.  Approval, through Ramsey County, is being sought for use of the upper fields on campus.  The school board will continue to monitor all aspects.

Pre-season meeting

Tuesday, March 4, is scheduled for the annual pre-season informational and chemical awareness meeting.  This is mandatory for all interested players.

Old Business:

1.  Spring Trip update:  Ben Gallagher reported that Air Tran has rescheduled the return trip from Orlando to 6 a.m.  Ben spoke with a reservation clerk, but was told that there was nothing she could do; the flight’s been rescheduled.  One option is to fly back on a different airline.  Randy Reichert has made a phone call to Sun Country, but had nothing definitive to report.  The necessary rooms have been confirmed with Disney.  There is a final payment due January 8.  Then, depending on funds raised, the trip may be paid for.

2.  Grocery bagging:  nothing to report.

3.  Banquet/silent auction:  Bruce Wyckoff authored an article about the upcoming dinner, and Rod Carew, in the recent addition of the Shoreview Bulletin.  17 reservations had been received by the time of the meeting.  Randy passed out “posters” to give to businesses or other locations for advertising.  Someone is needed to do decorations the night of the dinner.

4.  Captain’s practice:   Randy reminded the group that this is something that coaches cannot be involved with.  Therefore, a few dads will need to be available to supervise and throw in the batting cage.   Jim Szymanski will be available as needed.

5.  Year end banquet:  no report

New Business:

Other fundraising opportunities:  Jennifer Dickison proposed the idea of having an evening at Applebee’s.  There would be a night(s) set aside for MV baseball to receive a percentage of the proceeds.  She would like to see this happen yet this month.  Several others felt that now was not a good time, and Randy suggested that we table further discussion until the January meeting.

A motion was made by Mike Blumer to adjourn the meeting at 7:50 pm; motion seconded by Jim Szymanski.

The next regular Diamond Club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 8th, at 7:00 pm in the Mounds View Forum.

Your attendance is welcome and highly encouraged!
