"Mustang Baseball is Back Home"

Fundraising Campaign Overview

from Dave Stacy, Committee Chair

Like all friends of Mustang Baseball, the Diamond Club is thrilled that the District appropriated funds this year to bring baseball back to the Mounds View High School campus after 8 years of playing off-campus.  While the new field is a great addition to the Mustang baseball program, it is not yet comparable to many other high school fields in the area and in the Suburban East Conference in which we compete.  This is because, in these challenging financial times, the District was only able to afford to build a basic field without items such as bleachers, scoreboard, press box, and a storage building included. Therefore, with the approval of the MVHS and District administration, the Diamond Club has formed a Fundraising Committee (the "Committee") to raise the funds necessary to add these amenities to our baseball facility over the next two (2) years.

Fundraising Campaign Objectives

The purpose of the campaign is to raise funds to accomplish the following objectives:

  • Provide enduring "first class" practice and game facilities that will maximize the likelihood of MVHS baseball players achieving their maximum potential now and into the future.

  • Provide a high school "game day" experience for players and fans that are "second to none" in the Suburban East Conference and Twin Cities.

  • Increase the likelihood of more MVHS students attending baseball games.

  • Provide a facility comparable in quality to those enjoyed by other MVHS teams and that ranks in the top 20% of high school baseball facilities in Minnesota.

  • Be a source of pride for the entire MVHS community and inspire boys in the community to strive to be part of the Mustang baseball program and its rich tradition.

Facility Needs

In order to accomplish its objectives, the Committee has been working closely with Coach Downey and Student Activities Director, Bob Madison, since June 2008 to come up with a list of needs.  These are divided into two categories - immediate needs and longer term needs.

Immediate Needs & Estimated Costs

  • Two (2) new permanent batting cages ($12,000)
  • Replace net for portable batting cage ($700)
  • Protective field tarps ($1,000)
  • Miscellaneous field grooming tools & equipment ($1,200)
  • Outfield wind screen and fence cap ($2,600)
  • Foul poles with screens ($1,500)
  • Dugout helmet & bat racks, shelving ($1,000)
  • Flag pole and American flag ($750)

Longer Term Needs & Estimated Costs

  • Bleacher seating ($16,000)
  • Scoreboard ($20,000)
  • Storage building ($20,000)
  • Press box ($10,000)

Campaign Goal

With the above needs and estimates in mind, the Committee has set a goal to raise $100,000 during the campaign.  Any funds remaining after all items are completed and paid for will be placed in a "rainy day" account that can be used to supplement the regular Diamond Club annual operating budget.

Matching Gift

Shortly after the Committee had been formed and had started to plan the fundraising campaign, an anonymous donor approached Activities Director Bob Madison and Coach Downey with a matching gift challenge.  This individual has pledged to match every dollar we raise up to $50,000!  This means that the somewhat daunting task of raising $100,000 in these challenging economic times just became a lot easier - now we only need to raise $50,000 in order to meet our objectives.

Fundraising Approach

The Committee has decided to raise the funds necessary to meet our objectives via three methods.  Two of these target businesses in our community, while the third targets individual donors:

  • Scoreboard advertising - businesses
  • Outfield fence advertising - businesses
  • "Buy a Brick" campaign - individuals

Details of these 3 programs are still being worked out.  Once they are complete, we will add more information to this website.
