2010 Freshman Game Recaps

May 12 - East Ridge 2. Mounds View 1. The Mustangs did not play good baseball this day.  Mental errors on the base paths, at the plate
and in the field took the Mustangs out of their normal form.  Going into the
game the Mustangs we hitting .388 but only had 4 hits in the game.  The Mustangs had opportunities to win the game but East Ridge took advantage of the mental errors and played some solid ball.  The Mustangs are back at home on Thursday.
May 10 - Mounds View 13. Roseville 0. The Mustangs moved to 13-1-1 on the season with another 10 run affair.  The Mustangs pitching staff is
dominating their opponents with back to back no hitters (10 innings).  However, the Mustangs continue to allow opponents aboard with walks.  The Mustangs head to East Ridge on Wednesday.
May 6 - Mounds View 11. Cretin-Derham Hall 1. Mounds View took down Cretin on Thursday with ease.  The Mustangs were down 1-0 early but managed to open up the game with some great situational hitting in the 3rd inning.  The small ball started early and carried the Mustangs through the game.  Great bunts were laid down and a suicide squeeze
was executed to perfection.  The pitching staff held Cretin to no hits but
walks managed to give them life at times.  The Mustangs are at home next Monday against Roseville.
May 5 - Mounds View 11. Forest Lake SW 3: The Mustangs are in the heart of the season and playing well. The team as whole is hitting .353 with an on base percentage of .446. Down to 10 guys on the active roster due to injuries, everyone is holding up strong with playing a lot. The pitching is starting to go deep into games and producing outs. The defense as of late has been shaky at times, and must improve. The Mustangs look to keep the bats hot and pick up their defense as they face off against Cretin on Thursday.
May 3 - Mounds View Wins King of the Neighborhood Tournament and defeats Woodbury 11-2: The Mustangs ended the weekend as Kings of the Neighborhood. After dropping a 1-0 game to St. Anthony on Friday they needed to bounce back with a couple on Saturday. The bats were on fire against Irondale Saturday afternoon with a 21-2 victory. In the championship game the Mustangs found themselves in a pitchers dual. After 10 innings of play the Mustangs won 3-2. On Monday May 3rd, the Mustangs faced Woodbury at the varsity field. The bats were hot once again and the pitching was great. They came out on top 11-2. The Mustangs head to Forest Lake on Wednesday.
April 28 - Mounds View 2. Forest Lake Century 2. The Mustangs were in a pitchers dual this afternoon. Austin Smestad pitched 6 innings with 0 earned runs, 2 k's and managed to pitch nothing but outs. The Mustangs were quiet at the plate today. They had 1 hit through 6 innings of play. The Mustangs gave up a couple runs in the top of the 7th to go down 2-0. In the bottom of the 7th they fought back with a pair of singles from Nate Douvier and Ryan Gallagher. Gallagher made it to third on some great base running and was hit home on a sac fly by Josh Lavalle. The game ended in a 2-2 tie after 1 inning of extra play. The Mustangs head into the tourney this weekend looking to get their bats back!
April 27 -  The Mustangs are off to a great start. Moving to 7-0 the Mustangs have outscored their opponents 60-5. Defense has been phenomenal all around. Timely outs leave runners stranded on the paths and having less than 3 errors all year keep the innings short in the field. Pitching has been superior. Walks have been limited each game and pitches low in the strike zone have generated the outs we need. As a team the bats are hot. We are hitting collectively as a team .388 with an on base percentage of .471. The Mustangs look to keep rolling into the weekend as they play for the King of the Neighborhood trophy!
April 14 - Mounds View 3, Stillwater JH 0:  The Mustangs came to the plate on fire for the first inning which allowed them to get an early lead.  The three run lead is all Ethan Decaster (3 IP, 6K, 1H) and Austin Smestad (4 IP, 1 K, 1 H) needed.  Both pitchers threw to contact and allowed their defense to play solid behind them.  Lars Anderson took control behind the plate smothering balls in the dirt and picked off a runner at 3rd late in the game.  The Mustangs face the Minnetonka Skippers on Saturday at McCullough.

April 12 - Mounds View 11, Oak-Land JH 0:  The Mustangs won their first game of the year with lively bats.  Austin Smestad lead the team with 3 RBI's and went 2 for 3 (1B, 3B) with 2 stolen bases.  Max Knuston had a day at the plate going 2 for 3 and 1 stolen base.  Defensively the Mustangs were sound and had no errors.  Jesse Bonde and Darian Romanko started on the mound strong and held Oak-Land to 2 hits and 2 walks.  The Mustangs face Stillwater for their home opener on Wednesday.
