2010 JV Game Recaps

Monday, May 24: Mounds View 9. East Ridge 5.  The JV ended their season with a 9-5 win at East Ridge. The victory gave the Mustangs a final record of 16-4. Ryan Vijums, Pat DeWitt, Nick Helgeson and Sam Seiler helped fill out the JV roster and played key roles in the win. Colin Noius started on the hill and pitched well to gain the win. Zac Quammen came in relief and picked up the save while never allowing a runner to reach second. Offensively, the Mustangs were led by Austin Wikstrom's two hits, Pat Dewitt's two RBI, Cody Hunkle's RBI double and a Jeff Moline home run that was gone from the second it hit the bat. The JV coaches would like to thank all the players and parents for making the season fun and successful.

Friday, May 21: Mounds View 7. Forest Lake 6.  The JV escaped some inconsistent fielding and a 4 run top of the 7th to come away with a 7-6 eight inning win on Friday against Forest Lake. Up 6-2 in the top of the 7th, the Mustangs let the Rangers tie the game with 2 infield errors. The JV would go down quietly in the bottom of the 7th and turned a double play in the top of the 8th to keep Forest Lake from scoring. In the Mustangs half of the 8th, Matt Wilson led of with a single to left, followed by a Jeff Moline walk. Jayson Hoyme would execute a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up. An intentional walk to Austin Wikstrom would load the bases, with one out Colin Nouis then delivered the game winning hit over a drawn in infield to give the Mustangs their 15th win in 19 games. Quinn Madsen pitched 5 strong innings allowing no earned runs and Zac Quammen went the final two to pick up the win. The last JV game will be Monday at East Ridge.

Thursday, May 20: Mounds View 11. Park 2.  The JV started fast and never looked back beating Park 11-2 Thursday at MVHS. The Mustangs sent all nine hitters to the plate and scored four times 2 in the first inning. They followed that with two more in the second and then scored five in the fifth highlighted by a Matt Wilson grand slam. Nick Kruse went the distance on the mound for the Mustangs allowing only four hits while striking out five. The JV would like to thank the parents for the post game picnic. Next

up is Forest Lake on Friday at MVHS.

Tuesday, May 18: Mounds View 4. Cretin-Derham Hall 3. The Mustangs traveled to Cretin today and beat a good JV squad 4-3.  Zac
Quammen tossed his second complete game in as many starts, allowing a combined five hits and zero earned runs; four of those hits coming from
todays game.  The Mustang defense was a little shaky, to say the
least, committing a season high five errors and allowing three unearned
runs.  Nik Anderson had a heady play in the first inning getting a huge
out at third base; after committing an error and knowing he didnt
have the guy at first, he trailed the runner from second and picked him
off as he rounded third base.  Mounds Views bats were hot in the
first three innings of the game racking up six hits and three runs.
Kevin Flaherty (2-4, 3B, 2R) Quinn Madsen (2-3, 2B, R, 2 SB), and Nik
Anderson (0-2, BB, R, SB) plated the four runs.  The first three runs
were driven in by Matt Wilson (1-3, 2 RBI) and Jeff Moline (1-2, BB,
RBI, SB). The fourth run was due to a well executed early break and
steal as Quinn bought Nik enough time to steal home what ended up being
the game-winning run.  Come watch the Mustangs this Thursday at home as they get after their goal of winning the final five games of the year!

Monday, May 17: Mounds View 11. Hastings 3. The JV went to Veterans Field in Hastings on Monday and came away with a convincing 11-3 win.  Colin Nouis pitched 5 strong innings for the Mustangs giving up only 3 hits while fanning 6 Raider batters to pick up the win. Jayson Hoyme went the final two innings keeping Hastings bats quiet. Jeff Moline, Jayson Hoyme and Matt Wilson had multi-hit games with Wilson hitting the first JV homerun of the season. Defensively, the Mustangs were led by Eli Bucsko, who made more than one spectacular play in the field. Next up for the JV is Tuesday at Cretin.

Friday, May 14: White Bear Lake 6. Mounds View 2.  The JV hosted White Bear Lake on Friday and came out on the wrong end of a 6-2 game. The Bears outplayed the Mustangs in every facet controlling the game from the start. Scoring 5 runs in the second inning seemed to deflate the JV as they were never able to mount any threat. The Bears hit the ball hard throughout their line-up and their Sophomore pitcher kept the Mustangs off the bases. Nick Kruse started on the mound for the Mustangs and went four innings and Jason Hagemann went the final three. On a positive note Jayson Hoyme continued to hit the ball well. The JV record sits a very respectable 11-4. Next up for the JV is Hastings
at Veterans Park on Monday.

Wednesday, May 12: Mound View 6. Woodbury 4.  The JV traveled to McCullough on Wednesday to face Woodbury and came away with a 6 - 4 win. Quinn Madsen picked up the win by going 5 strong innings and Jayson Hoyme picked up the save. Wet conditions didn't dampen the Mustang bats as they pounded out 10 hits and had 16 base runnners. Tommy Kohen reached base on every at bat and Matt Wilson paced the Mustang offense by driving in 4 runs. Quinn Madsen helped his cause by gathering 3 hits and scoring 3 runs. Next up for the JV is Thursday at East Ridge.

Saturday, May 8: Mounds View 2. Minnetonka 0.  The Mustangs improved their record to ten wins and three losses with a 2-0 shutout of Minnetonka today.  Jason Hagemann pitched five and a third quality innings, and Zac Quammen came in with bases loaded striking out four of the five batters he faced to close the game.  The MV offense did everything they could to get on base drawing three walks and two HBPs.  Once again small ball was the method as MV scratched and clawed to beat a very good Minnetonka team.

Thursday, May 6: Mounds View 7. Stillwater 2.  The Mustangs got back on track today in a big way plating six runs in the top of the second inning.  From that point on it was up to Nick Kruse and the Mustang defense to hold Stillwater to two runs; one unearned.  Kruse threw a complete game giving up just three hits, despite allowing twelve base runners total, on his way to a 7-2 win over the Ponies.  The boys put on a clinic demonstrating how to manufacture runs by executing two bunt singles and a suicide squeeze in that second inning.  This group (and has played all year) demonstrated their commitment to execution and their ability to overcome adversity through their play today and are now 9-3 on the season.

Tuesday, May 4: Roseville 17. Mounds View 11. It's always a tough pill to swallow when you go into the seventh inning with the lead and walk away with the loss, however MV coughed up ten runs in the top of the seventh to lose what would have been an 11-7 win. The final score was 11-17 as the Raiders came from behind in a big way and to their credit stole a win from the Mustangs. While this one stung quite a bit, the lesson learned was that there's something to be said for battling all seven innings. All that's needed is one run to win a ball game, yet a win is always expected when eleven are plated. The JV team is looking forward to the opportunity to get the bad taste out of their mouths with an away game against Stillwater this Thursday. Expect to see the JV team bringing their "A" game in their next outing. (Coach Walsh)

Friday, April 30: Mounds View 4. Forest Lake 0. The Mustangs beat Forest Lake 4-0 today in large part due to a complete game shutout tossed by Zac Quammen. Upon further review of the book after the game it stood out, unbeknownst to anybody except Zac perhaps, that he carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Nobody said anything and neither did Zac as he went about his business walking zero, giving up one hit, and striking out nine. Matt Wilson, Eli Bucsko, and Colin Nouis all drove in runs today; Jay Hoyme scored the fourth MV run on a passed ball at the plate. Every lineup hitter was on the base-path at some point during the game just proving the JV squads success in regards to team contribution. This win was the JVs seventh in a row and eight of their ten first half games. (Coach Walsh)

Thursday, April 29: Mounds View 4. Park 2. The JV squad didn't get started until 7:40pm due to the Varsity's nine inning game, but they were in the Metrodome, with envisions of taking pitches over the baggy in right field, so the boys were perfectly content. Everybody for Mounds View got at least one at bat and played in the field, and they still pulled out a 4-2 victory in just an hour and twenty minutes. The Pitching was excellent yet again with Quinn Madsen, Colin Nouis, and Rushi Patel only allowing six hits and two walks. Matt Wilson was a one man wrecking crew driving in four runs on a single and an inside the park HR. The JV team has now won six in a row and seven of nine this year; everybody plays a lot of innings and they bring it every single day as a team. Our Next scheduled game is tomorrow (April 30) at Schumaker Field.  (Coach Walsh)

Tuesday, April 27: Mounds View 7. Cretin 0.  The JV blanked Cretin 7 - 0 Tuesday at MVHS. For the second game in a row the Mustangs have pitched a shut-out. On the strength of starter Nick Kruse and reliever Zac Quammen, the Mustangs were able to keep the Raiders from crossing the plate. The JV would score all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first inning by plating five runners. Jayson Hoyme and Rushi Patel each had two run singles in the inning. Eli Bucsko and Matt Wilson also had RBI's to pace the Mustangs attack. The JV next play Park at the Metrodome on Thursday at 6:30. (Coach Courtright)

Friday, April 23: Mounds View 6. White Bear Lake 0. The Mustangs beat up on their conference rivals (WBL) today 6-0.  Although the
score should have been 7-0, the umpire, upon listening for, didn't hear the run cross the plate while making a call at third base to end the inning, thus
negating our seventh run.  However bizarre the ruling, the Mustangs (and Coach Deschneau) held their composure and competed hard. Quinn Madsen and Rushi Patel tossed an excellent game only allowing six hits (three in the first inning alone) and one walk.  They held the White Bear bats silent the entire game as the Mustang's kept applying pressure on the offensive side of the ball.  Mounds View combined for eleven hits, five walks, two hit-by-pitch, and an impressive five stolen bases.  While all of these young men contribute to a really fun baseball environment, the perfectly executed suicide squeeze by Tommy Kohen and Eli Bucsko in the fourth inning iced the cake in today's game. (Coach Walsh)

Thursday, April 22: Mounds View 7. East Ridge 3. The JV improved it's record to 4 - 2 with a win over East Ridge at MVHS on Thursday by a score of 7 - 3. The Mustangs scored 4 runs in the third inning with the help of a Rushi Patel sacrifice fly and some aggresive baserunning. The Mustangs would score a single run in the fourth and put the game out of reach with a Jeff Moline two out, two run, single to left in the bottom of the sixth. Great defensive plays by Eli Bucsko and Austin Wikstrom also helped the cause. The Mustangs were led by starting pitcher Colin Nouis and reliever Zac Quammen. Next up for the JV is at White Bear Lake on Friday. (Coach Courtright)

Tuesday, April 20: Mounds View 14. Hastings 4.  The JV won their second in a row with a convincing 14 - 4, five inning game over Hastings at MVHS on Tuesday. The Mustangs pounded out 15 hits and aggresively ran the bases to send the Raiders home early. Multi-hit games were had by Quinn Madsen, Matt Wilson, Jayson Hoyme, Austin Wikstrom and Colin Nouis. Madsen and Wilson also drove in four runs each. Nick Kruse started on the hill for the Mustangs and Jason Hagemann came in relief.  Next game will be Thursday at MVHS vs. East Ridge. (Coach Courtright)

Monday, April 19: Mounds View 4. Irondale 3.  The JV got back on the winning track at MVHS on Monday. The Mustangs took care of cross town rival Irondale 4 - 3 in 9 innings. Irondale jumped out to an early 2 - 0 lead after one and led 3 - 1 until the fifth when the Mustangs would tie the game. Both teams had their chances to score late and in extra innings. Finally in the ninth, the JV would load the bases and Matt Herringshaw delivered a one out bases loaded single to win the game for the Mustangs.  Jayson Hoyme started on the mound and Rushi Patel pitched 5 strong innings in relief to get the win. Matt Wilson, Quinn Madsen, Jayson Hoyme and Chad Moen all had multi-hit games to pace the offense for the Mustangs. Next up is Hastings on Tuesday at MVHS. (Coach Courtright)

Friday, April 16: Woodbury 13. Mounds View 7.  The JV squad lost today 7-13. Mounds View jumped out to a 4-0 lead however Woodbury bounced back and would continue to do so throughout the game until they took their final lead late in the 5th. The MV bats were out in full force as the team burned through 4 different Woodbury pitchers. Unfortunately the Royals bats overtook the Mustang defense which gave the game dictation. It would be impossible to single out any player in our line-up based on offense as they all contributed at the plate. The 3 sophomores (Karl Elfstrom, Tyler Hansen, and Matt Wilson) all played key roles for the JV team today and helped keep it a close ballgame. The JV is off tomorrow as the Varsity travels to Minnetonka. (Coach Walsh)

Thursday, April 15: Mounds View 7. Stillwater 3.  The JV picked up their first win of the season by a score of 7-3 over Stillwater at MVHS. Nick Kruse started for the Mustangs and pitched 6 strong innings with Rushi Patel picking up the save in the seventh.  The JV jumped out to an early lead by scoring 5 runs in the first inning and were never really threatened. At the plate, the Mustangs were led by Jeff Moline and Cody Hunkle. Quinn Madsen quieted a Pony charge by throwing out a runner at the plate. The JV travels to Woodbury to meet the Royals on Friday. (Coach Courtright)

Tuesday, April 13: Roseville 5. Mounds View 4.  The JV season started off with a 5-4 loss at Roseville. The Raiders jumped out to a 5 run lead after the first two innings. The Mustangs would battle back with a single run in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth, while holding Roseville scoreless. The JV would get runners in scoring position in the top of the seventh but were unable to get them across. Zac Quammen started on the hill for the Mustangs and Quinn Madsen and Colin Noius both pitched in relief. Offensively, the team was led by Rushi Patel, who had two doubles. Next up for the JV is Stillwater on Thursday at MVHS.
