2007 Game Recaps
Friday, May 18, 2007
Freshman: Mounds View dropped their season finale 9-6 to Irondale to finish the year at 14-5. Missed opportunities and baserunning errors hurt the team, as the offense left 11 men on base. The Mustangs outhit Irondale 15-8, but also gave up 10 walks, which directly led to 6 Knight runs. Offensively, the team was led by Greg Stacy (3-3, 3B, 2 2B, BB, 2 RBI, run), who did his best to keep the team in the game by going 3-3 with two doubles and a triple. Also with multiple hits were Chris Nordling (2-4), Eric Bradley (3-3, SB), Jack Messerly (2-4, 2B), and Kyle Mauricio (2-4, 2 SB). Thank you to all parents and fans for your support throughout the season. (Coach Opitz)

Freshman: The freshmen knew they had to get off to a fast start if they wanted to avenge their earlier 9-6 loss to Cretin. Kyle Mauricio provided the perfect spark with a splashdown home run to lead off the bottom of the first, and the offense took off from there, leading the team to a 5 inning, 15-2 victory. For the game, the team combined to hit .667 (14-21), and waited out 7 walks for a team on-base percentage of .750. Starter Jason Porten (5 IP, 1 ER, 8 K, 0 BB) pitched the full 5 innings, striking out 8 without walking a batter to earn the win. Mauricio (3-3, 2 HR, 2B, 5 RBI, 3 runs, sac) also came through for the team's last run, adding another homer in the 4th to put an exclamation point on the rout. Perfect at the plate were Tony Gazich (2-2, 2 BB, 2 run, RBI) and Jeff Anderson (1-1, BB 3 RBI, run, sac), who added a spectacular diving catch in centerfield, easily the play of the year. The team will play rival Irondale on May 18 at Edgewood Middle School. (Coach Opitz)

Freshman: Every freshman reached base and 13 of the 14 scored a run in the team's 17-3 win over Minneapolis SW. Eric Bradley (4 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 6 K) pitched into the 5th inning, allowing only two earned runs to get the win before Joe Kelly (2/3 IP) closed out the game. Special thanks to all parents and grandparents who contributed to the team's picnic following the game, especially the Messerly family. The team's next game is May 16 at McCullough against Cretin. Freshman: The Mustangs defeated Hastings 10-3 in their rematch of last Thursday's extra-inning game. Tony Gazich (7 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 5 K, 2 BB) pitched a complete game, setting down the final 13 outs in order, including a mow-em-down 4th. Jeff Anderson (2-3, 2 2B, BB, 2 run, 3 RBI), Jack Messerly (2-2, 2 BB, 3 run), Rob Roman (2-4, 2B, 2 run), and Kyle Mauricio (2-4, run, 3 SB) each had two hits in the game, though every starter reached base via hit, walk, or both. The next game is May 15 against Minneapolis SW at Kohler. (Coach Opitz)
Thursday, May 10, 2007
Freshman: The Mustangs won 8-5 in 8 innings at Hastings. The story of the game was Mustang pitching, as Kyle Mauricio (6 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 13K) went 6 innings, striking out 13, including at least two in every full inning he pitched. Jason Porten (2 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 4 K) came on in the 7th to earn the win, striking out the side in the 8th to end the game. Offensively, Rob Roman (5-5, 3B, 2 2B, 3 run, RBI, SB) continued to terrorize the baseball on the way to a 5-5 day. He has now recorded a hit in his last 11 straight official at bats, and last 10 straight plate appearances. Other performances of note include consecutive sacrifices by Stephen Jacobs (bunt) and Joe Kelly (fly) to bring home Jeff Anderson in the 8th, and Greg Stacy's work behind the plate in helping the pitchers strike out 17 Raiders. The team's next game is a rematch with Hastings on May 14 at McCullough. (Coach Opitz)

Freshman: Two errors on bunt attempts by FL Century led to five runs in their 7-5 win over the MV Freshmen. Starter Jeff Anderson went 5 innings, allowing only 3 earned in the tough-luck loss. Jason Porten closed out the game without a batter reaching base. Rob Roman (4-4, 2B, 2 RBI, run) paced the offense with a perfect 4-4 day. Freshman: The Mustangs only led the game for one inning, but it was the most important one, as the team took a 13-8 victory at Stillwater JHS. With the team down two runs going into the top of the 7th, Kyle Mauricio proceeded to light a fire under everyone's butt, and lo and behold, the team responded with a seven run inning. Nate Iliff (6 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 9 K) pitched 6 innings of gutsy relief to earn the win. Offensively, every starter scored a run, and seven different players drew a walk. Jack Messerly (3-4, 2B, BB) led the team with three hits, and Billy Turner (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, HBP) also reached base four times in the win. The team's next game is May 9 at home vs. FL Century. Freshman: Five unearned runs in the 4th inning doomed the Mustangs in their 7-4 loss to Oak-Land JHS. Eric Bradley (2-3, 2 2B, BB, RBI) and Mike Jensen (2-3, BB, RBI, SB) led the offense with two hits each. (Coach Opitz)

Jeff Anderson (3 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 5 K) got the win in relief following a strong start by Eric Bradley (4 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 5 K). Offensively, a Nate Iliff (2-3, 2B, BB, 4 RBI) double with two outs in the fourth cleared the bases to tie the game, setting up a four run sixth. In the sixth, Joe Kelly (2-2, BB, SB, 2 runs) led off with a single, and following two outs, Iliff, Kyle Mauricio, and Rob Roman singled, setting up Billy Turner (1-2, 2 BB, 2 RBI) to earn two RBI's by legging out an infield single. The next game is Monday at home against

Freshman: In a game where it seemed every Mustang hit went straight into a Raider glove, Cretin took an 8-6 win over the Mustang freshmen, their first loss of the season. With two outs in the 4th, the Raiders strung together five hits and two walks to complete a six run inning. The team showed heart as they battled back in the 7th, scoring three runs on four hits and an error, with the three outs of the inning being line shots right at the outfielders, culminating with Tony Gazich's shot to the fence. Nate Iliff, Jason Porten (2 runs), and Jeff Anderson (3 RBI) each had two hits in the game.

Freshman: The Mustangs did not start strong Thursday against White Bear, making four errors and falling behind 2-0 after the top of the second. But Eric Bradley's home run to lead off the bottom half of the second started a six run rally, which was later capped off when Kyle Mauricio (2-3, HR, 3 RBI, 2 SB) hit a homer of his own. By the end of the 4th inning, the score was 14-2 and out of reach for the Bears. For the game, Mustang pitchers Nate Iliff (4 innings) and Joe Kelly did not allow an earned run, giving up just four hits. Bradley (3-3, HR, 3 RBI) continued his hot streak at the plate, and is now 9-10 with 11 RBI on the season. Jason Porten (3-4, 4 RBI) has also hit double digit RBI's, with 10 on the year. The next game will be played Monday at Oltman Junior High. (Coach Opitz)

For the second straight game, every Mustangs starter recorded a hit, and seven among them posted multi-hit games. The offense was led by Jack Messerly (3-4, 3B, 2B, 5 RBI), whose bases-loaded triple in the 3rd removed any doubt of the game's outcome. Kyle Mauricio (3-5, 4 runs), Jeff Anderson (2-3, BB, 4 RBI, 2 runs), Rob Roman (2-4, BB, 4 runs, 3 RBI), and Mike Jensen (2-3, BB, 2 runs, RBI, SB) also made significant contributions. Up next is

Nate Iliff (3 runs), Eric Bradley (8 RBI in 2 games), and Joe Kelly (2B) each had 3 hits. Other highlights included Kyle Mauricio's 2 triples and Jason Porten's 4 RBIs.
