2007 Game Recaps

Friday, May 18, 2007

Sophomore: The Mustangs won their final game of the season against Irondale 5-4 in the bottom of the 7th inning.  Gino Villella (7 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 6 BB, K) threw a complete game only giving up 3 earned runs; he battled an inconsistant strike zone, yet kept his composure and gave the team a chance to win.  The Mustang bat's started off slow and pretty much stayed that way throughout the game with only 3 hits until late in the 5th inning.  Both George Severson (1-3, RBI) and Andy Osborne (1-3, RBI) came through in a big way with RBI singles in the 5th and 3rd inning.  With Ben Houle (1-3, R, 2 SB) on 3rd, and pinch hitter Mitch Daas (0-0, BB, SB) on 2nd in the bottom of the 7th inning, Karl Eicher (1-1, 2B, 2 RBI) battled the pitcher in a 16 pitch, full count duel, before he came through with a huge pinch hit double scoring them both to win the game. Josh Balzer (1-1, SAC), Taylor Cole (1-2, SAC, 2B, SB).  I would like to thank all of the parents for making this season especially enjoyable, by showing up to each game in ubundant numbers, and bringing treats after each game.  I am so proud of each one of my players, as they never gave up on turning the season around, and became team players.  Thanks for a great season!  (Coach Walsh)

Thursday, May 17, 2007

Sophomore: The Mustangs lost a close one today (6-7) against Woodbury.  After allowing all 7 runs in the 2nd inning, it was just too much to overcome.  Josh Balzer (5 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K) came in for 5 excellent relief innings.  John Evangelist (2-3,BB), Karl Eicher (1-4, HR, R, RBI), and Taylor Cole (3-3, BB, 2 2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB)  all contributed in mounting a comeback. (Coach Walsh)

Tuesday, May 12, 2007

Sophomore: The Mounds View Mustang sophomores are really starting to turn the dial up as they beat Hastings 21- 3.  Andy Osborne (3 IP, ER, 2 BB, 4 K) started on the mound and Bill Thompson came in for the close allowing just 2 runs on no hits.  There is no fair way to summarize all of the offensive highlights other than to say that every spot in the lineup scored at least once.  John Evangelist has continued to strive in the lead off spot reaching base all 5 at bats and scoring 4 of the 5 times.  Gino Villella (2-2 HP, BB, SAC, 3 R, RBI, 2 SB), Ben Houle (4-4, 2 2B, 2 R, RBI), Mitch Daas (2-3, 2 BB, 3 R, RBI), Andy Osborne (2-3, 2 R, 2 RBI), and Matt Stoltman (2-3, HP, SAC, R, 2 RBI), all contributed offensively today.  Next game is Thursday at McCullough vs. Woodbury. (Coach Walsh)

Friday, May 11, 2007

Sophomore: The Mustangs get a huge victory over Roseville (9-1) today improving their record to a game above 500.  Jesse Nickols came out firing bullets, mowing down nine and allowing just 5 hits in 6 innings.  Taylor Cole came in and closed up shop, not allowing any hits and ending the game with a strikeout. Joel Genung (2-3, BB, 2 R, 2 SB) did an excellent job in the lead off spot today setting the tone for the entire game, while Josh Balzer (2-3, 2B, RBI, SB) kept the lineup rolling in the nine spot with some great hitting of his own.  Another highlight in this game was Bill Thompson's laser RBI double down the left field line; despite 2 strikeouts in his previous at bats, he kept his composure and contributed in a 4-run 5th inning.  The sophomore's next game is Tuesday at Hastings.  (Coach Walsh)

Thursday, May 10, 2007

Sophomore: For the first time in 5 years, the sophomore team beat Cretin (4-3).  Josh Balzer (6 IP, 2 H, 8 K, 1 ER) threw a gem and Taylor Cole (1 IP, 0 H, BB, 0 ER) came in and got the save.  Cole (2-3, 2B, RBI) was excellent offensively also as he hit in the game winning run.  Everybody in the lineup contributed today. Matt Stoltman (1-3, 2B, RBI), Jesse Nickols (2-3, 2B, RBI) and Mitch Daas (1-3, RBI) also had RBI’s in today’s game.  Karl Eicher (2-3, R, 2 SB) had some key hits, late in the game, which ended up contributing to the win as well.  The sophomores have now battled their way to .500 and play Roseville at home on Friday at 4 pm.  The picnic will immediately follow the game at McCullough.  (Coach Walsh)

Tuesday, May 8, 2007

Sophomore: The Mustangs beat Park today 15-0 in 5 innings.  Brad Blumer (4 IP, 4 H, 3 BB, 3 K) pitched a great 4 innings and then Bill Thompson (1 IP, HP, 0 H) came in for the close.  The offense was superb as all but 1 player in the lineup had at least 1 RBI.  In the 4th inning, everybody in the lineup scored at least once. Both Karl Eicher (4-4, 3B, 4 R, RBI, 4 SB) and Ben Houle (4-4, 2 R, 2 SB) went 4-4 today, while Jesse Nickols (3-4, 2 2B, R, 3 RBI) and Mitch Daas (3-4, R, 5 RBI, SB) went 3-4.  Mitch had his 2nd game, back to back, with at 5 RBI’s.  As a team, the sophomores are putting it together quite well.  Our next game is at Cretin on Thursday at 4pm. (Coach Walsh)

Friday, May 4, 2007

Sophomore: The Mustangs showed up to play and got the victory (10-1) over Forest LakeAndy Osborne threw the best game of his young high school career (7 IP, 6 H, ER, 7 K, 1 BB), facing 30 batters and only throwing 113 pitches.  His goal was to not allow any walks, and didn't until the 2nd to last batter of the game. John Evangelist (0-1, 2 BB, SAC, R, RBI) did a great job in the leadoff spot, while Brad Blumer (2-4), Jesse Nickols (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, R), and George Severson (1-2, 2B, SAC, 2 RBI) all played an intricit part in today's offense as well. Mitch Daas (3-3, 3 R HR, 2B, 3 R, 5 RBI, 2 SB) was in the groove tonight, just a triple shy of the cycle.  The sophomores are 3-1 in their last 4 games.  They play Park away at 4pm next Tuesday. (Coach Walsh)

Thursday, May 3, 2007

Sophomore: The sophomores didn't get going early, while the starting pitcher for Stillwater shut the Mustang offense down only allowing 3 runs, handing the Mustangs a 8-7 loss.  In the 7th inning the Stangs put up 4 runs and had the tying run cross the plate, only to have the run negated with the last out called at first; by a half step!  The disappointing factor in this game, other than losing by a step, was that the Mustangs gave up 6 unearned runs on 8 errors in innings 1-6. Jessie Nickols did a great job on the mound pitching 5 quality innings, and Taylor Cole came in with an excellent inning of relief.  The sophomore's next game is Friday (May 4 @4pm) at McCullough vs. Forest Lake.  The picnic will be postponed until next Friday. (Coach Walsh)

Tuesday, May 1, 2007

Sophomore: The sophomores get their 5th win (4-0) of the season tonight with the help of a complete game 3 hitter by Josh Balzer (7 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 9 K, 4 BB) on the mound.  Right after his excellent outing, Josh was rewarded for his excellence in the classroom as he was inducted into the National Honor Society.  This team has now won 2 games in a row as they are executing both offensively and defensively.  Gino Villella (1-1, SAC, 2 BB, 3 RBI) drove in 3 of the 4 runs, and Brad Blumer (0-1, SAC, BB, RBI) knocked in the other run on a sac hit to the right side.  It was a balanced team effort by the Mustangs.  Next game is Thursday at Stillwater.  (Coach Walsh)

Friday, April 27, 2007

Sophomore: The Mustangs beat Totino-Grace 9-8 on Friday, improving their record to 4-7.  Brad Blumer threw a complete game (7 IP, 2 ER, 6 K) keeping the Eagle hitters off balance through 7 innings.  The Mounds View defense was sound, committing just one error the entire game; even though it cost us 6 runs in the 2nd inning.  The offense, however, answered back in the top of the 3rd with 5 runs of their own, making it a ballgame and taking the momentum away from the Eagles.  Everybody in the lineup contributed with patience and confidence at the plate drawing 9 walks and 6 timely hits.  Jesse Nickols (2-3, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 SB) had a timely double in the 6th inning scoring the go-ahead and, what ended up being, the game winning run.  John Evangelist (1-1, 2 R, 2 BB, HP, 2 SB), Karl Eicher (2-4, 2 R, RBI, 2 SB), and George Severson (1-3, 2 R, BB, RBI, SB) all had clutch hits helping the team get a W.  The sophomore’s next game is WBL (4 pm-away) on Tuesday, May 1.  (Coach Walsh)

Thursday, April 26, 2007

Sophomore: The sophomores lost in disappointing fashion today as mental and physical errors led to runs for Woodbury in the latter innings.  The final was Royals 12, Mustangs 5.  The sophomores play Totino-Grace (away) on Friday at 4pm.  (Coach Walsh)

Tuesday, April 24, 2007

Sophomore: The Mustangs Win (10-9) in dramatic fashion with a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the 7th.  Josh Balzer started the game and had another solid outing (4 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 8 K).  George Severson (2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 K) came into the game in the 5th, keeping the lead in the Mustangs hands.  Alex Hoffman (1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER) came in for the save but ended up getting the win instead.  The Mustangs did a lot of fundamental things well at the plate, moving runners over, and sacrificing themselves to get in position for the win.  Andy Osborne (2-3, 4 SB, R) and Jesse Niclols (2-3, 3 run HR, SB) had a great games offensively. Jesse Nickols scored the winning run of the game on a flawlessly executed suicide squeeze, assisted by Matt Stoltman, who laid down a perfect bunt. Next game is on Thursday vs. Woodbury (away @ 4 pm).  (Coach Walsh)

Saturday, April 21, 2007

Sophomore: The sophomores again were unable to hold a late inning lead resulting in a loss (13-9), BUT, not without a valiant effort!  Gino Villella (6 IP, 4 ER, 3 K) led the team to the 7th by pitching 6 very solid innings.  The Pony’s scored 7 runs, 1 earned, in the top of the 7th.  The Mustangs scored 9 of their own led by an Andy Osborne 4th inning pinch hit HR.  Karl Eicher (3-4, 2B, 2 SB), Bill Thompson (1-3, 2B, RBI), Mitch Daas (3-3, BB, 2 R, 2 RBI), and Taylor Cole (1-1, 2B, RBI) all combined for some great offense.  The next game for the sophomores is at home vs. Hastings.  (Coach Walsh)

Friday, April 20, 2007

Sophomore: The Mustangs pull out a win against Roseville pretty handily (14-5).  Brad Blumer (4 IP, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) started on the hill for the soph’s getting the “W”.  Jesse Nickols (3 IP, 0 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) came in for the close, shutting down the Raider’s chance for a comeback.  The offense was led again by Karl Eicher (1-5, 3 RBI, 2B), yet was enforced by Ben Houle (2-3, 2B, BB, 4 RBI, 2 SB).  John Evangelist (3-4, SB, RBI) had a superb game jump starting the bottom half of the lineup with Matt Stoltman (2-4 2B, 3 R, SB, RBI); who gave himself a birthday gift with an excellent game as well!  Next game is at McCullough vs. Stillwater 10:00 am. (Coach Walsh)

Thursday, April 19, 2007

Sophomore: While it was a frustrating day for the Mustangs, they showed some moxie.  The sophomores led Cretin into the 6th inning 6-5, however the wheels fell off as Cretin scored 9 runs on 4 walks and 5 Mustang errors.  They didn't give up though, with a late 7th inning rally scoring 3, and just inches away from having 5 runs with a runner on 3rd. Taylor Cole roped one to the warning track, but Cretin's center fielder snow-coned it as he fell to the wall.  Andy Osborne had an excellent outing on the hill giving up just 1 earned run on a solo HR in the 3rd inning. Alex Hoffman came into the game in the 7th inning and shut down Cretin giving his team a chance to come back.  Karl Eicher was a huge presence at the plate today (3-4, HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, 2 SB) as he hit a 3 run HR in the bottom of the first inning, letting Cretin know that it wasn't going to be easy.  Ben Houle contributed (2-4, 2 RBI, 2 R) along with Mitch Daas (3-4, 2 2B) keeping the bottom of the lineup rolling.  Coach Walsh is still looking for his first win, in 5 years, against Cretin.  Next game is Friday at the Roseville Legion field vs. Roseville.  (Coach Walsh)

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

Sophomore: The Mustangs fall to 1-4 with a tough loss to Park (12-13).  The defense committed 5 errors resulting in 8 unearned runs for Park.  Joel Genung started on the mound throwing a solid 3 2/3 before being relieved by pitcher George Severson due to the defensive errors.  Severson had a very respectable first appearance on the hill allowing only 4 hits on 16 batters, giving up 3 earned runs.  Offensively, the Mustangs were very good as each member of the lineup reached base at least once.  Josh Balzer was the story in this game with a 2 out bases-clearing double in the 4th inning; his first hit of the year.  He followed that up with another RBI in the 5th, giving him a total 4 RBI's.  Matt Stoltman executed a perfect hit and run in the 3rd and drew 4 walks. John Evangelist drew 5 walks in the lead off spot scoring 3 times.  Andy Osborne went 2-4, reaching 3 times, with 2 RBI's and 3 stolen bases.  It was a tough 7th inning loss, but the sophomores showed great resilience and are starting to come around.  Their timing couldn't be more perfect as they play Cretin on Thursday.  (Coach Walsh)
