2009 Sophomore Game Recaps
Woodbury Friday May 15
Mustangs win! In the final game of the season, the boys took care of business with a final score of 4-2 and a season record of 12-8. Jason Hagemann (5IP, 0ER, 2H, 6BB, 4K) started the game on the mound and never allowed Woodbury's potent offense to get started. Austin Wikstrom (1-3, R) started off the scoring, following a clutch full count single to lead off the second inning; he was driven in by Nik Anderson (1-3, RBI) who has brought production the bottom half of the line up all year long. Brett Becker (2-2, BB, 3B, 2R, RBI) drove in the second run of the game with an RBI triple and was driven in himself by Matt Kruger (3-3, SAC, 2RBI) in the very next AB on a sacrifice fly. This team has really adapted to playing baseball the right way, doing the little things well, as the SAC's total went from seven to nineteen in the last ten games. The team's final run was scored by the same Becker/Kruger combination. There was a little scare in the sixth inning as the Royals plated their first two batters with no outs; however Blake Anderson (2IP, 0ER, 2H, 1BB, K) came in from center field and was able to pick Colin Noius and the team up, with a huge two-inning save. He battled his way out of a jam in the sixth with the tying run at the plate, and again in the seventh with the wining run at the plate. The season ended in dramatic fashion with a deep fly ball to right field as Mike Taylor made the final out of the year. Way to go Sophomores! Thank you for all your hard work and willingness to let me play a role in your lives. I will always remember this team as I never had to ask of something twice and as a group that truly desired to get better! A special THANK YOU to all the parents for your support and attendance! Without you we would have no program and no fan base (outside of girlfriends).
The Mustangs are firing on all cylinders as they pummeled SLP 12-2 and earning their second consecutive win. Nick Kruse (5IP, W, ER, 6H, 3BB, 4K) started the day on the hill for the Mustangs and Jay Hoyme (1IP, 0ER, 0H, 0BB, 2K) locked the door and threw away the key pitching the sixth. They combined for an impressive six K's only allowing six hits. Eli Bucsko (3-4, R, SB) was captain clutch today leading off the hitting nearly every inning he came to the plate, and Jeff Moline (3-3, BB, HR, R, 3RBI) busted out of a slump in a huge way with a three-run bomb scoring the first, tying, and winning runs of the game all with one swing of the bat. Austin Wikstrom (1-4, 2R, SB, 2RBI) stole his first base of the season driving in a pair and scoring twice. Matt Goldsmith (2-4, 2B, 2R, 2RBI) stayed hot while Matt Kruger (1-2, 2BB, 2R, 2SB) and Mike Taylor (1-2, SAC, R, RBI) made sure they were on base to be driven in. There was no rhyme or rhythm to the game as runs were scored all over the place in nearly every inning. The Mustangs have now won eight of their last eleven games and are red hot facing off Friday against the #1 Woodbury Royals to end their sophomore season!
CDH Tuesday May 12
The Mustangs earned the "W" with the freshman pitcher Matt Herringshaw called up to face off against the powerhouse Cretin Raiders (8-2). Harringshaw (7IP, CG, W, 2ER, 4H, 4BB, 9K) went the distance holding the Raiders to only 4 hits on 108 pitches. The defense met expectations/capabilities as they played error free ball. The score however doesn't reflect the games entirety, as it was a 3-2 game going into the sixth inning. Jayson Hoyme (2-3, 2RBI, R), Kevin Flaherty (2-3, R), Brett Becker (2-4, SB, 2 RBI), and Blake Anderson (2-3, SAC, HR, R, 2RBI) all had multi-hit games. Nick Goldsmith (1-3, 2B) led off the five run fifth inning with a double as both Hoyme and Nik Anderson (1-2, SAC, R, 2RBI) drove in two runs in the inning; solidifying a Mustang win. Tommy Kohen was a huge asset off the bench scoring a run and running for both Goldsmith and Flaherty. It was a much needed win for the team and for me as I always want to beat the team I once played for. Our next game is tomorrow at McCullough vs.
The Mustangs lost a tough 2-5 game today. Every time the Mustangs got something going, they shot themselves in the foot with mental errors. The highlight was how the sophomores rallied the troops in the final two innings to try and get something going. They stranded bases loaded in both the sixth (0 outs) and seventh (1 out) inning, unfortunately only producing one run. Blake Anderson (2-3, 2B, HBP, RBI), Kevin Flaherty (1-2, HBP), Matt Kruger (1-3, RBI, SB), and Nik Anderson (3-3, 3B, 2R) all had quality ABs for the Mustangs today; however the score fell in the Ponies favor. The post-game meeting was spent talking (fervently) about the need to be able to win close games against the elite teams in the conference, which can only be accomplished when they play Mustang baseball. We will see what we're made of in the coming days as we are faced with the hardest part of the schedule down the home stretch. Our next game is next Tuesday at McCullough vs. Cretin-Derham Hall.
Park 5-7-09
The Mustangs were beaten 10-3 today by Park Cottage Grove. The score wasn't indicative of how close the game was; it was a one run game until Park plated five unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning. Park put up two more (one earned) in the seventh, which was answered with a solo run in the bottom half of the inning; obviously not enough though ending a 4 game winning streak. The Mustang's first three batters produced the team's four hits in the game, as the pitchers for Park shut down spots four-nine in the lineup. Blake Anderson (1-4, 2B, R, RBI) drove in Nik Anderson (1-3, BB, SB, R) on a double in the third inning and was later driven in by Matt Kruger (2-3, SB, RBI). The only other run was plated by Brett Becker (0-0, BB, SB, R) in the seventh, as he drew a pinch hit walk and scored on a wild pitch. Our next game is tomorrow at
The Mustangs won a close game (7-6) in extra innings today after the Raiders tied the game scoring 2 runs in the 6th. Eli Bucsko (1-3, 2 SB, 2 R), Kevin Flaherty (2-3, BB, RBI), Nik Anderson (1-2, BB, 2 SAC, 4 RBI), Blake Anderson (3-4, 2B, BB, 3SB, 4 R), and Brett Becker (1-2, 2 BB, SAC, SB, RBI) all had big days at the plate, while Jason Hagemann kept the game within reach coming in off the bench in the 2nd inning. The guys did a great job hanging in the game and not giving it away! Our next game is Thursday at McCullough vs. Park Cottage Grove.
The Mustangs beat
WBL 4-30-09
Everybody in MV's lineup had either a hit or an RBI in today's victory (8-1) over WBL. With the game tied 1-1 in the 4th, Eli Bucsko drew a walk and drove in, what ended up being, the game winner. Most of the excitement came right after that when Blake Anderson (batting) and Tommy Kohen (on 3rd base) executed a perfect suicide squeeze. The Bears were so surprise by this that they ended up hurling the ball 15 feet over Blakes head on his way to 1st and then again on his way to 2nd; clearing the bases and allowing Blake to reach 3rd on a sacrifice. WBL didn't threaten again after that and only got 1 hit off starter Jason Hagemann. Our next game is at McCullough vs.
FL 4-28-09
Following a rough first inning in the field, the Mustangs settled down and got their revenge on the Rangers with a 4-2 victory. Colin Nouis was excellent on the mound as he maintained his composure and held the Rangers to zero earned runs in 6 complete innings. The sophomore's new closer Blake Anderson picked up his first save in as many opportunities. The game got exciting in the 5th inning when Austin Wikstrom (1-3, 2B, R) led off with a double smashed down the line in left field. Matt Kruger (1-3, R, 2 RBI), who was moved down to the 8th spot in the lineup to get some production out of the bottom half, came up huge with a 2 out-2 RBI single, driving in Wikstrom and Tommy Kohen (1-3, SB, R). Eli Bucsko (0-4, RBI) and Nik Anderson (1-2, BB, RBI) picked up the other 2 RBI's and never looked back. Our next game is Thursday at McCullough vs. WBL
Mustangs Host Forest Lake
The Mustangs lost a close one today (2-4), but only after tying the game at 2 in the bottom of the 6th inning. It slipped away in the top of the 7th as the Rangers put 2 unearned runs on the board. Nick Goldsmith pitched 6 2/3 innings and the sophomore's new closer Blake Anderson finished the game on the mound.
Mustangs Host Irondale
The Mustangs win a close one today 11-10 after leading 10-2 in the fifth inning. The sixth inning was a tough one as MV allowed 8 runs to score tying it up at 10 a piece. The score doesn't reflect how good of an outing Jason Hagemann had on the mound as only 2 of the 10 runs were earned. Blake Anderson came in from center field to shut down the Knights after Mike Taylor put the ball in play with two outs in the bottom of the 6th to score the winning run. Nick Goldsmith and Matt Kruger both hit homeruns helping to ensure a Mustangs victory. Our next game is Monday at McCullough vs.
Mustangs Host Woodbury
The Mustangs ended their losing streak beating a tough Woodbury team 10-4. Zac Quammen was on the hill today and tossed a complete game to pick up the win. Zac and the Mustangs held their composure as the Royals tied the game at 4 a piece in the fifth inning; from that point, they scored 6 runs and shut the door on the Royals picking up a much needed win! Brett Becker (4-4, 2B, 4R, 2SB, 2RBI) stayed red hot as Nick Goldsmith (2-4, 3RBI) led the charge in the first inning with a 2 RBI rip down the left field line. Jayson Hoyme (1-3, BB, 2B, 2RBI) came up huge in the third inning with a clutch 2 out double scoring Jeff Moline and Brett Becker. And in the fifth inning Colin Nouis (1-4, 2RBI) picked up a couple RBIs with some help from the wind as it carried a deep fly ball to right some 60 feet before it landed behind the infielders in fair territory. Becker and
Mustangs at Cretin Derham Hall
The Mustangs lost a close one at Cretin today with the final score 2-5. Jason Hagemann pitched very well surrendering 3 earned runs on 7 hits. Brett Becker stayed hot going 2-3 with a walk and a stolen base. The Mustangs fought hard today but just couldn't get the bats going or capitalize on opportunities. Our next game is Friday at McCullough vs. Woodbury.
Mustangs Host Totino Grace
The Mustangs lost a close game today (2-4) stranding runners in scoring position 4 of the 7 innings. Nick Kruse (4 2/3IP, 5BB, 4H, 5K, 4ER) started on the hill as Blake Anderson (2 1/3IP, 0BB, 3H, 0ER) finished the game allowing no runs. The Mustangs simply weren't able to take advantage of opportunities as they were walked 7 times in the 6th and 7th innings, yet were only able to put 2 up on the board. Brett Becker (2-4, SB) had an excellent game against his old team, as he and Nik Anderson (1-3, 2B) were the only 2 guys on the Mustang roster to come up with hits. You couldn't ask for anything more than a competitive game amongst friends on a perfect Saturday afternoon. A very special THANK YOU to all the parents and varsity team manager's who helped make this day so much fun for our team! The picnic following the game was very much appreciated by every member of the sophomore baseball team! Our next game is on Monday at McCullough vs.
Mustangs Host
Upon forgetting half the equipment at the school, it was evident that today's game was a little overlooked. The Mustangs left runners stranded at 3rd in 4 of the 5 innings as they fell 0-11.
Mustangs at Park C-G
The Mustangs beat Park today 11-1 as Zac Quammen (6IP, 2H, 0BB, K, ER) tossed all 6 innings in a dominant fashion. Kevin Flaherty (0-3, BB, R, K, 3RBI) threw out another base runner putting his total at 3 in 3 games. Nick Kruse (2-3, 3R, SB, RBI) and Brett Becker (2-3, R, SB, RBI) both had a great day at the plate combining for 4 hits, one of them a slash, 4 runs, 2 SB, and 2 RBI's. It was an all around team effort with sound defense for the Mustangs today. Our next game is tomorrow at McCullough vs
Mustangs host Hastings
The Mustangs played extremely well today as they top
The Mustangs played a great game that slipped out of their hands in the 9th inning (7-6). Matt Kruger (3-5, 2R, 2SB), Blake Anderson (1-5, 2R, 2B, 2RBI), Jeff Moline (4-5, R, 2RBI), and Jayson Hoyme (3-3, SAC, RBI) had great days at the plate; our defense kept us in the game from there with some excellent plays and a couple base runners thrown out! The pitching was great started off by Nick Kruse (3IP, 5K, 4H, 4BB, 2ER), and followed by Brett Becker(2IP, 2H, BB, 0ER) Zac Quammen (IP, K, 2H, 2BB, ER), Tommy Kohen (IP, 3H, BB, 0ER), and Colin Nouis (2IP, K, H, BB, ER). After being down 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning with 2 outs, the Mustangs came back and tied it up. They showed great composure and never gave up. Great game Mustangs! Our next game is Tuesday at

The Mustangs were determined to prove themselves putting up 14 runs in 5 innings as they defeated the Raiders 14 nil. The defense was extremely tough only allowing
Mustangs @ WBL
The Mustangs knocked the rust off today in defeated fashion 3-8. The game looked as though the Mustangs would come out on top through 3 - leading 3-1 and leaving bases loaded in the 4th. Blake Anderson (1-3, 2B, BB, R, 2 SB) started the season off with a double as Nik Anderson (2-4, RBI), Tommy Kohen (2-3, RBI), and Eli Bucsko (1-2, 2B, BB, R) all hit the ball well trying to keep it close. While the Bears put 8 on the board, the MV pitching staff actually had a good day only allowing 4 earned runs. In an effort to protect the arms of our youngsters and ease them into what could be 5 months of baseball, each pitcher threw just 2 innings regardless of their pitch count. Collin Nouis (2IP, 3K, BB, 2H, ER) started the game off well throwing his fastball for a strike 90.9% ratio, throwing 36 total pitches. Zac Quammen (2IP, 3BB, 2H, 3ER) mowed down the top of their order in the 3rd getting 3 outs on 9 pitches, throwing 35 total pitches. Brett Becker (2IP, 3BB, H, 0ER) tossed the 5th and 6th only giving up 1 hit throwing 36 total pitches. All in all, the Mustangs played a good game as the boys realized the importance of staying focused and playing tough for all 7 innings. Next game is tomorrow at Rosetown Legion Field vs.
