2008 Sophomore Game Recaps
SOPHOMORE - Mon, May 19, 2008 - Mounds View 8,
The Mustangs Win! The boys put a lot of things together today and really made me proud! They showed up to play despite the rain, the cold, no shelter, wet baseballs, etc. as these were all things that played a huge part in our mental approach to the game. Well we brought it today and won8-4 in a shortened game. The bats were hot today: Greg Stacy (1-2) ripped a screamer up the middle, Blake Schrunk(1-1, BB, R) walked to make bases loaded in the third, TJ Scheele (1-1, BB, 2 R), and Rob Roman (1-2, 2 R, RBI) reached base and scored on both plate appearances, and home runs were hit by both Joe Kelly (1-2, HR, RBI) and William Turner (2-2, GSHR, R, 5 RBI). An inside-the-park for Kelly and a grand slam mashed so hard there's really no words to describe it... I don't think the ball has landed yet and could very well be orbiting Mars right now! Gerrit Schoener did what he always does (3 up - 3 down) except for a "minor" hiccup in the second inning. **Oh yeah - Nate Iliff had 2 Stolen Bases, as Stacy's courtesy runner, in the third inning** Banquet is tomorrow night at Jimmy's on CR E in White Bear Lake - 6:30pm. WAY TO END THE SEASON ON A GOOD NOTE - THIS SEASON HAS BEEN A MEMORABLE ONE FOR ME AS I HAD A GREAT TIME GETTING TO KNOW YOU AND HAVING YOU ALL ON MY TEAM! A special thank you goes out to all the parents - for providing your boys such encouragement and showing your support by coming to their games! (Coach Walsh)
FRESHMAN - Fri, May 16, 2008 - Woodbury 12, Mounds View 8
The Mustangs lost their 4th game in a row to Woodbury 8-12. It was a close game until the 7th inning when we let up 5 runs. The boys battled hard for this one yet just came up short in the end. Tony Gazich pitched extremely well leaving with the lead in tact. Blake Schrunk also pitched well. The team put together 12 hits and reached base a combined 21 times. Our next and last game is Monday at the Rosetown Legion Field against
SOPHOMORE - Thu, May 15, 2008 - Irondale 6, Mounds View 0
Unfortunately the Mustangs continued their losing streak, making 3 in a row. Nate Iliff had a no-hitter going into the 7th inning yet errors and walks didn't allow him a chance to get out of it. Gerrit Schoener closed out the game allowing no runs. Joe Kelly and Jeff Moline were both 2-3 on the day. We were shut out with a final score of 0-6. Our next game and picnic are tomorrow at McCullough. (Coach Walsh)
SOPHOMORE - Tue, May 13, 2008 - Cretin 12, Mounds View 2
The Mustangs came out crushing the ball, yet a few calls going the other way limited our scoring chances. Cretin put up 9 runs in the first inning that was insurmountable. Tony Gazich had a clutch hit in the first inning which allowed him to score on the first of Rob Roman's 2 triples. William Turner got his first legitimate stolen base beating the throw with one of his famous head first slides. The final score was 2-12 in 5 innings. Our next game is on Thursday against Irondale @ McCullough. (Coach Walsh)
SOPHOMORE - Mon, May 12, 2008 -
The Mustangs lost 2-5 to
SOPHOMORE - Fri, May 9, 2008 - Mounds View 7,
Mounds View Sophs Came Alive! We undoubtedly faced the best pitcher we've seen all year today (Nepp Stillwater), yet showed a lot of resilience throughout the entire game and truly showed a lot of heart and determination. William "run through a brick wall" Turner (1-1, R) scored the first run of the game with a head-first slide that surprised and terrified the heck out of the catcher... and me!! He was driven in by Blake Schrunk (3-3, RBI, SB) as he reached in all three plate appearances. However, the real excitement happened as we were down 6-3 going into the bottom of the 7th; the team rallied as follows: Nate Iliff (7 IP, 8 H, BB, 5 K) ripped a line drive right at the left fielder for the first out of the inning. Tony Gazich (3-4, HR, RBI, SB) after seeing the first pitch in for a ball just crushed a fast ball, left up, for a HR over the right-center field fence. Mike Jensen (1-4, 2b, R) was up 3rd and smoked the first pitch into the left-center field gap for a sure double. Rob "Maximus" Roman (2-4, HR, 2 RBI) watched two balls go by and did exactly as he was told to (look for "his" pitch and drive it), as he took it over the left-center field fence for the second HR of inning and tying it up 6-6. Jeff Moline (2-4, 2b, HR, 2 RBI) was next up, and just like every kid dreams about, took a 2-1 fast ball and put it into orbit hitting a walk off bomb to win the game 7-6. The team really came together and got a well-deserved victory after a tough thump in the previous game. Way to go Mustangs! Our next game is on Monday against
SOPHOMORE - Thu, May 8, 2008 - Park 14, Mounds View 4
The Mustangs scored enough runs to win most games, yet couldnt outscore the scorching hot Park hitters. We lost 4-14 in 5 innings of play, however I thought we played pretty darn well. Highlights in the game include Jeff Molines screamer of a HR over the left field fence in the top of the first and Rob Maximus Roman going 2-2, scoring twice w/an RBI and an SB as well. We played fundamentally sound and I am positive that we will bounce back tomorrow. Our next game is tomorrow against
SOPHOMORE - Tue, May 6, 2008 - Mounds View 5, Hastings 5
The Mustangs tied 5-5 today in the rain. Blake Schrunk pitched through some tough conditions going deep into the 7th inning. Stephen Jacobs was huge for us today as he entered the game in the top of the 7th, pitched us out of a jam, and then got a clutch hit keeping our rally going in the bottom of the 7th inning. Chris Nordling had himself a nice 2-3 day w/an RBI as well. Tony Gazich was 1-2 w/a great sac bunt and an RBI as well. Mike Jensen gave the team a spark in the 6th inning with a line drive HR over the left field fence. All in all it was a tough day in tough conditions. Our next game is on Thursday at Park C-G. (Coach Walsh)
SOPHOMORE - Mon, May 5, 2008 -
Mounds View 11, Totino-Grace 4
The Mustangs took the field well prepared today with a sole objective of working hard and it paid of as we picked up a victory (11-4) over Totino Grace. Tony Gazich (7 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 6 K, 4 BB) led the team on the mound throwing a 7 inning complete game and equaling his best performance of the year. The bats were hot also as the Mustangs had 9 guys with base-hits. This was the best overall feat of the year for us by far! Next game is tomorrow May 6 @ McCullough vs.
SOPHOMORE - Thu, May 1, 2008 -
It was a great pitching duel out there today as both pitchers threw
complete games, yet the Mustangs faltered in the 6th allowing the tying
and go ahead runs to score on errors. Gerrit Schoener (6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER,
1 BB, 2 K) threw a gem completing 6 innings well under his pitch count.
We tried to mount a comeback in the 7th, scoring our first 2 batters,
yet just came up short! Our next game is tomorrow (Friday, May 02,
2008) against
SOPHOMORE - Tue, April 29, 2008 -
After jumping out to a 5 run lead w/ 1 out in the first, the Mustangs lose 13- 5. Ironically there were also 13 errors committed by the Mustangs as well. It just didn't seem like we ever really got into the game with 8 missed signs and a handful of mental mistakes which isn't the MO for this Mustang team. With that said; Iliff (4 IP, 5 H, 4 K, 5 BB, 0 ER), Scheele (1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER), Turner 1 2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 2 K), and Moline (1/3 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 ER), pitched their tails off and really showed what they are made of! We play tomorrow at McCullough vs. Totino Grace at 4:15pm. (Coach Walsh)

SOPHOMORE - Wed, Apr 23, 2008 -
Mounds View 8,
Due to the graciousness of the SLP coach, for allowing us to borrow
their team's equipment and encouraging us to keep it an official game,
we were able to pull out an 8-4 victory today. Tony Gazich (4 IP, 0 ER,
5 K, BB) and Stephen Jacobs (3 IP, 1 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) allowed just 1
earned run to get the win - save combo. Chris Nordling (2-4, 2 R SB,
RBI), T.J. Scheele (3-4, R, 3b, 4 RBI), Joe Kelly (2-3, R, 2b, BB, 2
RBI) and Eli Bucsko (2-4, R, RBI) all drove in runs and Billy Turner
(2-4, R, SB) got his first stolen base of the year. (Coach Walsh)
SOPHOMORE - Mon, April 21, 2008 -
Mounds View 3, Cretin Derham-Hall 2
The sophomores pull off a 3-2 victory over Cretin Derham-Hall. It was an excellent win for the team that ended in an RBI infield hit, which took a sprawled out head first dive into first base by the lanky Joe Kelly. Excitement completely overtook coach Wahlund as he jumped high enough to dunk a basketball with his chin (which he actually does often). The pitching by Schoener (5 IP, 2 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 0 ER) and Turner (2 IP, 0 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 0 ER) was unreal as they held CDH to 2 hits, combined. The RBI's came from Shoener, Kelly, and Nordling; however, it was a complete team effort! The soph's are now 3-2 overall as we face off against
SOPHOMORE - Fri, April 18, 2008 -
Every year the sophomores travel to Stillwater Mother Nature rears it ugly side at us. In the game of baseball, it doesn't get much worse than being down 7 runs in the second inning with near freezing rain slapping you in the face when almost half the team was without a second layer. However, the determination was definitely present today as we rallied behind Nate Iliff's impressive pitching performance, to tie it up going into the 7th inning! Nobody on the Mustang squad gave in offensively or defensively, however we just weren't able to pull it off in the bottom of the 7th as Still H2O scored an unearned run. Both Coaches were extremely impressed with the team's effort today as we look forward to a day off from games on Monday. Our next game is vs. Cretin at McCullough (4:15pm) on Tuesday, April 22. (Coach Walsh)
SOPHOMORE - Thu, April 17, 2008 - Park 8, Mounds View 4
The sophomores just never got it together today as the team energy was just high enough not to be considered sleeping! The pitching staff in Tony Gazich, Stephen Jacobs, and T.J. Sheele gave everything they had to keep us into the game; however a combined 7 defensive and mental errors got the best of us today. Park earned 2 of the 8 runs they scored, while we earned 4 ourselves. It was just one of those days; in fact, not even Coach Wahlund's awe-inspiring umpiring skills could keep us a float. The best part about baseball is that every game is different and every game is a learning experience! Our next game is tomorrow (4:15pm) at
SOPHOMORE - Wed, April 16, 2008 - Mounds View 5,
The Mustangs scratched out a victory (5-4) in the bottom of the 7th inning in walk off fashion; however, this walk-off was a drawn walk with bases loaded by Stephen Jacobs. Each pitcher [Blake Schrunk (5 IP, 8 K, BB, 1 ER) Billy Turner (2 IP, 2 K, BB, 1 ER)] only let in 1 earned run each, pitching great games. We have a few things to work on defensively, yet up to this point weve made up for it offensively. Jeff Moline (1-3, 2 RBI, SB, BB), Nate Iliff (1-3, RBI, BB, SB), and Greg Stacy (2-4, RBI) all drove in runs outside of Jacobs. Joe Kelly (1-1, 3 BB, 3 SB, R) and Robert Roman (2-4, 2 SB, R) also had great games offensively. The Mustangs next game is against Park C-G - Thursday - 4:15pm @ McCullough (Coach Walsh)
