2010 Sophomore Game Recaps

 

Monday, May 24: East Ridge 10. Mounds View 9: The Mustangs lost a wild game to finish off their season Monday night. After falling behind early in the game the bats came alive behind Max Knutson's 6 RBI game.  The Mustang's scored 10 runs in the final three innings only to tie the game but unfortuneately the winning run was scored in the Bottom of the 7th. Jake Thompson and Lars Anderson lead the way with 3 hits each. Max Knutson, Jordan Varberg and Ty Hansen each had two hits on the evening.

 

Friday, May 21: Forest Lake 11. Mounds View 6: The offense just couldn't get going against Forest Lake on Friday night, scoring 6 runs on only 6 hits, Alex Peterson hit the teams only extra base hit, a double in the bottom of the 7th but it wasn't enough as the Mustangs fell to Forest Lake 11-6.

 

Thursday, May 20: Mounds View 2. park 0: Ryan Vijums scattered four hits over seven innings for a complete game shutout.  The Mustang's offense struggled to get going, however Lars Anderson's lead off double in the 4th followed by Sam Seiler's RBI double put the Mustangs in front and it was all they needed behind the strong performance of Vijums.

 

Tuesday May 18: Mounds View 6. Cretin 5: The sophomore team won 6-5 in an 8 inning battle against Cretin. The Mustangs got the scoring started early scoring 4 runs in the top of the first, all with 2 outs. Ethan DeCaster started and went 5 innings giving up 1 earned run on 6 hits. Cretin scored a run in the 7th to force extras, but the Mustangs answered right back with an eventual game winning double off the bat of Lars Anderson. He led the Mustangs at the dish going 2-4 with a single, double, RBI and a run scored. Sam Seiler and Nick Helgeson also had 2 hits respectively.

 

Monday, May 17: Hastings 2 Mounds View 1: The sophomore team lost 2-1 in a pitcher's duel.  The bats were quieted for a second straight game as the Mustangs only had 4 hits for the day.  Jordan Varberg started and went the distance giving up 2 runs on 8 hits while striking out
2. 

 

Friday, May 14: White Bear Lake 6 Mounds View 4: The sophomore team could only muster up 5 hits on the day.  Ryan Vijums started and gave way to Jake Hanzalic and Alex Peterson, who finished up the last 3
innings. White Bear Lake scored 6 runs in the first 4 innings.

 

Wednesday, May 12: Mounds View 5 Woodbury 4 : The sophomore team won a tough extra inning battle against Woodbury 5-4 in 8 innings.  The Mustangs decided not to wake the bats up until the bottom of the 7th
inning, scoring their first 2 runs of the game, sending it into extras
tied 2-2.  In the top of the 8th the Royals hit a 2 run home run to
take the lead back.  In the bottom of the 8th inning the Mustangs had
the bases loaded with 2 outs, when Lars Anderson ended the game with a bases clearing 3 run double. Anderson was 2-5 with a single and a
double, with a run scored and had 4 RBI's.  Ethan DeCaster, who led
off the 8th with a double, was 2-3 with a walk and a run scored. 
Ethan also started and went 7 strong innings giving up 3 runs (2
earned), 9 hits, 2 walks and 6 strike outs.  The Mustangs travel to
East Ridge tomorrow and are at home on Friday against White Bear Lake.

 

Friday, May 7: Stillwater 5. Mounds View 1. The sophomore team lost to Stillwater on Friday 5-1.  The Ponies would get all the runs they needed in the 4th inning batting around and scoring 5 runs.  Jake Hanzalik came in relief of Jordan Varberg and threw 2 1/3 of scoreless baseball.  He gave up 2 hits and had 2 strike outs.  Pat DeWitt was 2-4 with 2 singles and a run scored.  Nick Helgeson was 2-3 with 2 singles.  The Mustangs are off Monday and travel to Hastings on Tuesday.

 

Tuesday, May 4: Mounds View 18. Roseville 0. The sophomore team beat Roseville 18-0 on Tuesday. The Mustangs were led with a stellar pitching performance by Ryan Vijums, who didn't give up a hit over 5 innings. He also had 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.  The Mustangs were led at the plate by Freshman Lars Anderson, who was a triple shy of the cycle, going 4-4 with 2 singles, a double and a grand slam home run. For the day Lars had 6 RBI's and scored 3 runs.  Jordan Varberg was 2-3 with 2 singles, 3 runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Nick Helgeson also contributed with 3 RBI's. Every player who started had at least one hit and 4 players had 2 or more hits. Great Job Guys!

 

 

Friday, April 30: The sophomore game was suspended in the top of the 6th inning with the Mustangs down 7-4.  The game will be resumed when we play Forest Lake at McCullough the last game of the season. We practice Monday at McCullough. 

 

Thursday, April 29: Mounds View 8. Park 3. The sophomore team got back on the winning track with an 8-3 victory over Park. The Mustangs would get all they needed in the first inning with the first 4 batters reaching base and scoring. Brett Burckhardt started and went all 7 innings to earn the victory. He scattered 6 hits, gave up 3 runs (1 earned) and struck out 3. He also led the Mustangs at the plate going 4-4 with 3 singles and a double. He had an RBI and scored a run as well. Jake Thompson had 2 hits with an RBI. We finish out the week at Forest Lake on Friday afternoon.

 

Tuesday, April 27: Cretin-Derham Hall 7. Mounds View 5.  The sophomore team lost a tough game against Cretin 7-5 on Tuesday afternoon. Cretin started the scoring early with a 3-run home run in the 1st, but the Mustangs did a good job of answering with a run in the bottom half of the inning. The Mustangs were led at the plate by Ethan DeCaster who was 3-3 with a single, 2 doubles and an RBI. Jordan Varberg was 2-4 with 2 singles. Alex Peterson was 2-3 with a single, double and 3 RBI's. Ethan DeCaster also pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless ball giving up 2 hits, walking 3 and striking out 3. The Mustangs are off tomorrow and travel to Park on Thursday.

 

Monday, April 26: Mounds View 11. Irondale 2. The sophomore team beat Irondale 11-2 on Monday afternoon at Moundsview. Karl Elfstrom started and threw a tremendous game going 5 1/3, giving up 1 run on 2 hits, while fanning 9 and walking 3. The Mustangs were lead at the plate by Lars Anderson who was 2-4 with 3 RBI's and 2 runs scored. Nick Helgeson was also 2-4 with a single and a double with 2 RBI's. Ryan Vijums was 1-1 with 2 walks and a run scored. Jordan Varberg was 1-2 with 3 RBI's a run scored and a walk.  The Mustangs play Cretin at McCullough on Tuesday. Good Job Guys!

 

Friday, April 23: White Bear Lake 6. Mounds View 5. The sophomore team lost to White Bear Lake on Friday afternoon 6-5. It looked as though the Mustangs bats picked up where they left off against Eagle Ridge, as we scored 3 runs in the first and 1 in the second. Ethan DeCaster started and did a tremendous job going 5 innings while giving up 4 runs (2 earned), he gave up 5 hits, struck out 6 and walked 1. The Mustangs were led at the plate by Ryan Vijums who was 3-3 with 2 singles and a double, he also had 2 RBI�s and a stolen base. Sam Seiler was also 1-3 with 2 RBI�s. The Mustangs take on cross-town rival Irondale on Monday at Mounds View High School.

 

Thursday, April 22: Mounds View 13. East Ridge 4. The sophomore team got a much needed victory over Eagle Ridge 13-4 on Thursday afternoon. The Mustangs got another strong pitching performance from Jordan Varberg who went 4 innings, scattering 5 hits, giving up 2 runs, striking out 2 and walking 2. He gave way to Jake Hanzalik who went the final 2 innings, giving up 1 hit and striking out 2. The Mustang bats came alive today as we scored 13 runs on 17 hits. Dewitt, Vijums, Elfstrom, Burckhardt and Anderson all had 2 hits while Seiler had 3 hits. The Mustangs finish the week off at White Bear Lake tomorrow.

 

Tuesday, April 20: Hastings 4. Mounds View 2.  The sophomore team lost a tough game again to Hastings 4-2.  Karl Elfstrom started and did a tremendous job going 3 innings giving up 2 runs (1 earned), 2 hits, 4 strikeouts and 3 walks.  He gave way to Ethan DeCaster, who also threw the ball extremely well.  He went 4 innings giving up 1 hit, 2 runs (1 earned), 4 strikeouts and a walk. The Mustangs were led at the plate by newly added freshman Lars Anderson, who was 2-3 with single, double, 1 RBI and did a tremendous job of handling the pitching staff.  The Mustangs play next on Thursday at McCullough against East Ridge. 

 

Saturday, April 17: Minnetonka 12. Mounds View 6. The sophomore team lost to Minnetonka 12-6 on Saturday afternoon.  Jordan Varberg started and did and excellent job going 4 2/3 innings giving up 2 hits and 4 runs while striking out 1 and walking 2.  The Mustangs were led at the plate by Matt Wilson who was 2-4 with a single and a double, he had 3 RBI's and a stolen base.  Tyler Hansen was 2-4 with a single and a triple with 2 stolen bases and a run scored.  Nick Helgeson had 3 walks and a run scored as well as a stolen base.  We practice Monday and play Hastings on Tuesday at McCullough.

 

Friday, April 16: Woodbury 15. Mounds View 14.  The sophomore team lost a shootout to Woodbury 15-14.  Woodbury scored 4 in the first and 3 in the second.  Mounds View did a great job of answering with 4 in the second and 4 runs in the fourth.  Unfortunately with having 4 games this week our pitching was pretty thin for this game.  Woodbury scored 7 runs over the final 2 frames to win the ballgame.  The Mustangs were led at the plate by Ryan Vijums who was 3-4 with a triple, 2 stolen bases, 2 runs scored and an RBI. Sam Seiler and Jake Thompson were both 2-3.  Seiler had 2 RBI's and a run scored while Thompson scored 2 runs, had an RBI and a sac bunt.  Quinn Madsen was 1-4 with 3 RBI's 2 stolen bases and a run scored. Ross Tenney also had 2 walks and 3 runs scored.

 

Thursday, April 15: Stillwater 5. Mounds View 4.  The sophomore team lost a tough fought battle against Stillwater 5-4 in 9 innings.  Jake Hanzalik started the game and went 2 2/3 solid innings.  He gave way to Burckhardt, Wilson and Varberg who did an excellent job and combined to give up 4 hits and 2 runs over the final 6 1/3 innings.  The Mustangs were led at the plate by Matt Wilson who was 2-3 with an RBI.  Tyler Hansen was 1-3 with a 2B, 5 stolen bases, 3 runs scored and an RBI.  Nick Helgeson had the Mustangs other 2 RBI's.  Stillwater scored in their opening half of the frame, but the Mustangs answered that run with one of their own in the bottom half of the 1st.  Stillwater scored 2 more runs in the 3rd inning and single runs in the 7th and 9th.  Mounds View scored 1 in the 3rd inning, 2 in the 5th inning, with a nice 2 out RBI by Matt Wilson.  Unfortunately we couldn't muster up anything else after that.  Jake Thompson had another web gem type diving catch with 2 outs and runners on 1st and 2nd in the top of the 7th.

 

 

Tuesday, April 13: Mounds View 13. Roseville 4.  The sophomore team opened their season with a great road victory, winning 13-4 at Roseville.  Carl Elfstrom started the game and went 2 innings giving up 2 unearned runs.  He gave way to Jordan Vaberg who went the next 2 innings giving up 2 runs, 1 earned.  Cody Alleva finished up the game going the final 3 innings not allowing a hit.  The offense did their job as the Mustands scored 13 runs on 14 hits.  They were led at the plate by Jordan Varberg who went 3-5 with a run scored.  Matt Wilson was 2-3 with 2 RBI's and Jake Hanzalik was 1-3 with 3 RBI's.  Ty Hansen and Nick Helgeson were both 2-5, Hansen scored 3 runs with a stolen base and an RBI, Helgeson scored 4 runs with an RBI and 2 HBP.  Let's not forget about Jake Thompson's great diving catch in left center field.  Great Job Guys!
