2010 Varsity Game Recaps

Thursday, May 27: Tartan 7. Mounds View 6. The Mustangs were eliminated from Section play in 11 innings at Tartan in a long and drama filled game.  The Mustangs jumped out early; scoring 6 runs in the top of the 1st inning when the first 6 batters in the order all scored.  The Mustangs had 6 hits, 2 walks and a HBP in the inning.  The Titans responded with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the 1st on 3 hits and a walk.  With another run in the 2nd and 2 more in the 3rd, the Titans had closed the gap to 6-5.  It stayed that way until the bottom of the 7th when the Titans tied the game on a very close play at the plate.  In extra innings, both teams were unable to score until the bottom of the 11th when the Titans were able to score the winning run.  Both teams had numerous chances to score runs throughout the game; the Mustangs were unable to score a run for 10 innings following the 6 run outburst in the 1st and they stranded 16 runners; the Titans trumped that by stranding 19 runners.  Gerrit Schoener started on the mound for the Mustangs and was chased by the Titan's bats in the 3rd inning; Matt Herringshaw relieved and held the Titans scoreless until Nate Iliff took over in the 5th.  Iliff competed extremely hard; going 6 and 1/3 in the heat while also batting and baserunning late in the game because the Mustangs had exhausted their bench.  Iliff allowed 1 earned run, struck out 6, and worked out of many jams to keep his team in the game.  At the plate, the Mustangs had multi-hit games from Brett Becker (4 for 6, 1 Run), Kyle Mauricio (2 for 4, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 1 RBI, 1 Run), Nate Iliff (3 for 5, 1 Run, 1 BB, 2 RBI), Matt Wilson (2 for 3, BB, RBi sac fly), and Nik Anderson (2 for 5, sac, RBI).  It's extremely disappointing to end a season this way because the Mustangs played hard.  Congratulations to Tartan as well for competing hard.  The coaching staff is proud of how the players approached this game - while they did not make all the plays necessary to win the game, they competed extremely hard, they responded to adversity throughout the game, and they supported each other as teammates during the game in a positive manner.  As Nate Iliff said to his teammates after the game, "We may not have won. but this was the most fun game of the year because we competed well as a team."

Monday, May 24: Woodbury 7. Mounds View 3. The Royals handed the Mustangs their 5th straight loss to end the regular season.  Colin Keefe's 2-run homer in the bottom of the 1st gave the Royals a 2-0 lead.  The Mustangs closed to within 2-1 when Matt Kruger scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Quinn Madsen in the top of the 3rd.  The Royals responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd to lead 4-1.  In the top of the 5th, Madsen reached on a 2 out single, and scored on Tony Gazich's RBI double.  Again, the Royals responded with 2 of their own in the bottom of the 5th to lead 6-2.  The Mustangs scored their final run in the 6th with back-to-back doubles by Kevin Flaherty and Jay Porten.  The Royals would add an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th.  Jason Hagemann started for the Mustangs and went 3 innings, Nick Kruse made his varsity debut with 2 innings, and Tony Gazich finished the final inning on the mound.  Gazich was 3 for 4 on the day with 2 doubles and an RBI, Madsen was 1 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI sac fly, Porten was 2 for 3 with a double and an an RBI, and Flaherty was 1 for 2 with a run scored, a double and a walk.  The Mustangs will open Section play on the road in an elimination game this Thursday - Section seedings will be done on Tuesday night.

Saturday, May 22: Irondale 5. Mounds View 4. The Mustangs lost their 2nd 1-run game in 2 days and 7th this season at Irondale on Saturday.  The Mustangs opened the scoring in the top of the first when Kyle Mauricio singled with 2 outs, stole 2B, and scored on an RBI single by Nate Iliff.  Irondale took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 2nd when after retiring the first 2 batters, the Mustangs walked the next 2 batters who both scored on base hits.  The Mustangs responded with 3 runs in the top of the 3rd - Tony Gazich walked, Iliff and Matt Kruger singled to load the bases.  Robert Roman then delivered a 2-RBI single, and Nik Anderson followed with an RBI sacrifice fly.   With the score now 4-2 in favor of the Mustangs, the Mustangs gave it back with 2 unearned runs in the bottom of the 3rd.  The score stayed knotted at 4-4 through the 4th, and in the bottom of the 5th, the Knights scored another unearned run to take a 5-4 lead which would hold up.  Gerrit Schoener started on the mound for the Mustangs and was removed due to arm injury in the 3rd inning.  Matt Herringshaw relieved and completed the final 4 innings allowing no earned runs.  The Mustangs had some productive offensive days from Kyle Mauricio (3 for 4, 1 run, 2 doubles), Tony Gazich (2 runs, 2 BB's), Nate Iliff (2 for 4, 1 run, 1 RBI), Matt Kruger (2 for 3, 1 run, 1 BB), Robert Roman (1 for 2, 1 BB, 2 RB I's, 1 sacrifice) and Nik Anderson (1 for 3, 1 RBI sacrifice fly).  The Mustangs close out the regular season on Monday at Woodbury.

Friday, May 21: Forest Lake 2. Mounds View 1. The Mustangs lost their 6th 1-run game of the year under the lights at Schumacher Field in Forest Lake.  Nate Iliff went the distance for the Mustangs; pitching his way through 4 errors and allowing no hits through 5 innings.  The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd when Nik Anderson singled, advanced to 2B on an error, and scored on Brett Becker's RBI single.  Tony Gazich opened the 4th with a double, but the Mustangs failed on a bunt attempt to advance him, and Gazich was eventually stranded at 2B.  The Mustangs also failed on a sacrifice bunt in the 6th.  The Mustangs managed just 4 hits, K'ed 9 times, and went down 1-2-3 in 5 of their 7 at-bats; it was not a good night at the plate for the Mustangs.  Forest Lake opened the 6th with their first base hit, and following 2 outs, they tied the score with a base hit.  In the bottom of the 7th, a walk and a HBP to open the inning got things started, and a bases loaded single with 1 out won the game for the Rangers.  The Mustangs travel to Irondale on Saturday.

Wednesday, May 19: Park 6. Mounds View 2.  Park pounded out 10 hits and starter Drew Benson struck out 8 in a complete game victory for the Wolfpack.  The Mustangs opened the scoring in the top of the first with a lead-off single by Brett Becker who stole 2B, and was sent home on a 2-out RBI single by Matt Kruger.  Chris Nordling produced a 4-4-3 double play in the bottom of the first inning.  The Wolfpack tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the 2nd, and they added 3 in the 3rd with a walk, 2 singles and a triple by piutcher Benson.  The Mustangs closed to within 4-2 on a Kyle Mauricio solo homerun in the top of the 5th.  The Wolfpack responded with 2 insurance runs in the bottom of the 5th for the 6-2 final.  Tony Gazich started for the Mustangs and went 5 innings, and Matt Herringshaw pitched a 1-2-3 6th inning for the Mustangs.  The Mustangs generated 8 hits, but Benson walked none, and with his 8 strikeouts, he was able to snuff out all Mustang scoring opportunities.  The Mustangs travel to Forest Lake's Schumacher Park on Friday night.

Monday, May 17: Cretin-Derham Hall 13. Mounds View 8.  On Senior Day, the Mustangs played their second extra inning game in a row in falling in 9 innings to the Raiders.  The game was not crisply played, the Mustangs committed 7 errors to the Raiders 5 errors, and the Mustangs walked 8 batters while the Raiders walked 6.  The Mustangs opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st when Kyle Mauricio opened the game with a double, and Jay Porten's bunt was overthrown at 1B to score Mauricio.  The Raiders tied the score in the top of the 2nd at 1-1.  Both teams scored 2 runs in the 3rd inning to remain tied at 3-3.  Cretin scored 3 in the top of the 4th and the Mustangs added a run in the bottom of the 4th to make it a 2 run game at 6-4.  Cody Hunkle's RBI in the bottom of the 5th to score Nate Iliff closed the gap to 6-5.  The Raiders added an insurance run in the top of the 7th to take a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the 7th.  With 3 hits, and help from 2 Raiders errors, the Mustangs tied the score to send the game to extra innings.  Each team also scored a run in the 8th inning to keep the game alive.  The Mustangs had the potential winning run on 3B in both the 7th and 8th innings with 2 outs, but were unable to get the run across.  The Raiders scored 5 in the 9th to win the game.  The Mustangs produced 12 hits: Joe Kelly and Eric Bradley were both 3 for 5, and Robert Roman was 3 for 3 on the day.  Matt Herringshaw started for the Mustangs.  Jason Hagemann threw 5 innings, allowing only 2 earned runs, to keep his team in the game.  Billy Turner and Zac Quammen finished up on the mound for the Mustangs.  A disappointing loss, but one positive was that the Mustangs kept competing and came back multiple times when they were down.  The Mustangs travel to Park on Wednesday.

Friday, May 14: Mounds View 2. White Bear Lake 1. The Mustangs prevailed in a well played and exciting high school baseball game that went 10 innings at White Bear Lake on Friday.  The Mustangs' Gerrit Schoener and the Bears' Ben Clark locked up in a pitchers dual - Billy Turner broke up Clark's no-hitter in the top of the 5th with a base hit to right field, and Schoener's no-hitter was broken up in the bottom of the 6th.  Through 5 innings, Schoener faced only 1 over the minimum - in the bottom of the 3rd, the Mustangs turned 2 on a ground ball from Mike Jensen at 3B to Chris Nordling at 2B and on to Tony Gazich at 1B to help the cause.  In the bottom of the 6th, the Bears loaded the bases with a couple of hits and a walk, but SS Jay Porten throwing his body in front of a hard hit ball saved a run, and Schoener then got a ground ball to Gazich at 1B to end the threat.  Clark was equally effective; only 1 Mustang baserunner reached 2B through the 8th inning.  In the top of the 9th, Kyle Mauricio walked, and advanced to 3B on a base hit by Porten.  With Mauricio at 3B, a pitch squirted a short distance away from the catcher and Mauricio never hesitated and scored on a very close play at the plate to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the 9th, the Bears advanced a runner to 2B on a walk and a base hit.  The next batter hit a deep line drive to CF that Matt Kruger made a great play on to make the catch; the Bears' pinch runner at 2B, Mark Palmer, matched Mauricio's aggressiveness and speed, and he scored from 2B on the catch.  While there was some question on the tag up at 2B, it was an aggressive and good play by the Bears to tie the score.  Relief pitcher Matt Herringshaw got a strikeout to end the remaining threat in the bottom of the 9th and send the game to the 10th.  In the top of the 10th with 2 outs, Brett Becker reached 1B with a base hit and advanced to 2B on a passed ball.  Tony Gazich then laced a line shot single to RF which scored Becker with what would be the winning run - he almost hit the ball" too hard" to the OF'er; but Becker's speed got him home safely.  The Bears got a 2 out single in the bottom of the 10th, but Herringshaw got the Bears' #3 hitter to pop out to Gazich to end the game.  The Mustangs pitched great (1 earned run combined by starter Schoener and reliever Herringshaw) as they have as a team for the entire 2nd half of the season (team ERA of 1.42 for the 2nd half of the season).  This pitching, combined with solid defense and some timely offense, the Mustangs got a much needed and well deserved win.  Tony Gazich was on the receiving end of 16 put-outs today; 7 coming from across the diamond by 3B'man Mike Jensen.  Nate Iliff had a multi-hit game with 2 hits in 5 at-bats.  The Mustangs host Cretin-Derham Hall on Senior Day on Monday.

Wednesday, May 12: East Ridge 4. Mounds View 3: East Ridge executed more plays than the Mustangs to win 4-3.  Nate Iliff pitched well enough to win; allowing 1 earned run in a complete game outing.  East Ridge's Mitch Luebbe handcuffed the Mustangs, allowing just 2 hits and 2 walks for a complete game victory. Jay Porten singled and Matt Kruger doubled for the Mustangs.  The Mustangs travel to Woodbury on Thursday and White Bear Lake on Friday.

Monday, May 10: Mounds View 4. Hastings 2.  On a wet and windy field, the Mustangs defeated the Raiders 4-2.  In the bottom of the 1st, Robert Roman singled home Tony Gazich to open the scoring.  The Mustangs added 2 in the 4th on a Roman double, a walk to Eric Bradley, a Kevin Flaherty sac bunt moving the runners into scoring position, and a Nik Anderson 2 RBI single hit hard through a pulled in infield.  The Mustangs also added a run in the 5th when Roman singled in Brett Becker who had led off the inning with a base hit.  Roman was 3 for 3 with a run scored, 2 doubles and 2 RBI's.  Flaherty and Becker also had a pair of hits apiece.  Matt Herringshaw started and went the distance in pitching an outstanding game for the Mustangs to get the win - 1 earned run, 11 K's, 2 hits and 2 BB's.  The Mustangs host East Ridge on Wednesday.

Wednesday, May 5: Stillwater 3. Mounds View 0. Stillwater pitcher David Koll dominated the Mustangs on Wednesday, striking out 9 and scattering 4 hits.  The Mustangs had one threat in the 4th inning - with runners on 1B and 2B with 0 outs, Koll was able to get the next 3 batters without the Mustangs advancing a baseruner.  Mustangs pitcher Gerrit Schoener pitched a complete game, allowing 2 earned runs and striking out 4.  The Mustangs 4 hits came from Brett Becker and Nate Iliff; 2 hits apiece.  The Mustangs travel to Woodbury on Friday.

Monday, May 3: Mounds View 6. Roseville 4. The Mustangs scored 6 runs early, and held on to come away with a victory at Roseville.  The Mustangs jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with a Brett Becker walk, and 3 singles by Jay Porten, Kyle Mauricio and Tony Gazich who picked up 2 RBI's.  In the top of the second, with one out, Robert Roman and Matt Kruger singled, and Becker then also singled to knock in a run.  With 2 outs, Mauricio hit a 3-run HR over the RF fence to extend the Mustangs' lead to 6-0.  The Mustangs were unable to produce any runs after that.  Mauricio was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, the HR and 3 RBI's.  Becker, Billy Turner, and Nate Iliff all reached base safely 2 times for the game.  The Raiders pecked away at the lead with a run in the second inning and 3 runs in the 4th.  In the bottom of the 5th, Gazich made a nice over the shoulder catch of a deep fly ball to end the inning with a Raider baserunner that would have scored, and in the bottom of the 6th, Kruger made a diving catch of a shallow fly ball to end that inning.  Nate Iliff started and went 5 strong innings for the win, and Matt Herringshaw went the final 2 innings to get the save.  The 2 pitchers threw 68% strikes which is above the team goal of 60%, and they threw first pitch strikes at a rate of 73% which is above the team goal of 67%.  They walked no Raider batters.  Great job by the pitchers - putting the ball in play and letting the defense make the plays.  The Mustangs host Stillwater on Wednesday.

Friday, April 30: At the halfway point in the season, the Mustangs record stands at 2-8; clearly a disappointing win-loss record.  The team feels it "gave away" 3 games that should have been won, but the fact is that the Mustangs were unable to execute and close those games out.  Going forward into the second half of the season, we will continue to be positive, we will stay together as a team, and we will continue to focus on executing the fundamentals and "being at our best when it matters most."

Friday, April 30: Forest Lake 4. Mounds View 2. The Mustangs closed out the first half of their season with a loss to Forest Lake.  It was a well played game for the most part by both teams.  Forest Lake freshman Phil Sauer scattered 10 Mustangs hits, struck out 4, walked none, and he was able to get a key out when he needed it in a couple of situations where the Mustangs were threatening.  Gerrit Schoener pitched well for the Mustangs as well, striking out 4, walking 1, and allowing 9 hits.  The Rangers came up with 4 hits in the 5th inning to score 3 runs and overcome a 2-1 Mustangs lead at the time.  Billy Turner continued to have great at-bats for the second day in a row, today going 2 for 2 with 2 HBP's and an RBI.  Tony Gazich hit the ball hard and was 2 for 4 with a run scored.  The Mustangs travel to Roseville on Monday.

Thursday, April 29: Park 11. Mounds View 9. The Mustangs lost yet another tough one at the Metrodome on Thursday in 9 innings.  The Mustangs led 1-0 after 1 inning on an RBI single by Tony Gazich scoring Kyle Mauricio.  Jay Porten singled home Matt Kruger in the 2nd to provide a 2-0 lead.  The Wolfpack scored 3 in the 3rd with the help of 3 walks to take a 3-2 lead.  The Mustangs retook the lead in the bottom of the 4th 4-3 when Mke Jensen walked, stole 2B and scored on a Kruger single.  Kruger scored on another RBI single by Porten. In the 5th, the Mustangs extended the lead to 5-3 on Billy Turner's double that scored Robert Roman.  Park responded with 2 runs in the 6th to tie the score at 5-5.  The Wolfpack took a 6-5 lead with a run in the top of the 7th, and the Mustangs scored one to send the game to extra innings.  Neither team scored in the 8th; Jason Hagemann recording the only 1-2-3 inning on the night for the Mustangs.  Park scored 5 unearned runs in the 9th to seemingly put the game out of reach.  The Mustangs rallied in the bottom of the 9th to score 3 - Roman leading off the inning with a single, followed by a HBP for Turner, a double by sophomore Matt Wilson in his first varsity AB that scored 2, and singles by Kruger and Mauricio.  The Mustangs left the tying run on base to end the game.  The Mustangs host Forest Lake on Friday.

Monday, April 26: Cretin-Derham Hall 9. Mounds View 8. The Mustangs lost a tough game at Cretin on Monday; giving up a 2-run lead in the bottom of the 7th to lose the ballgame - Cretin scoring 3 to end the game.  Cretin opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd with 2 singles and a double.  In the top of the 4th, the Mustangs took a lead 3-2: Tony Gazich led off the inning with a walk, Nate Iliff singled, and Robert Roman walked.  Nik Anderson produced an RBI, and then Brett Becker's double scored 2 more.  Cretin re-took the lead in the bottom of the 5th, scoring 3 runs to lead 5-3.  The Mustangs responded with a run in the top of the 6th on a first and third double steal play, to close the gap to 5-4.  Cretin got that run back in the bottom of the 6th, capitalizing on an error to do so.  Down 6-4 going into the top of the 7th, Matt Kruger walked to start the inning, followed by back to back doubles by Becker and Jay Porten, Porten's double scoring Kruger and Becker to tie the score at 6-6.  Kyle Mauricio then reached on an error and advanced to 2B on defensive indifference.  An error allowed pinch runner Joe Kelly to score the go-ahead run, and Iliff then singled in Mauricio to give the Mustangs a 2 run lead.  The Mustangs offense was led by Becker who was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles, a run, and 2 RBI's, and Iliff who was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Iliff started and went 5 innings on the mound, striking out 4 and walking none.  Gerrit Shoener and Gazich finished up on the mound.  The Mustangs play Park in the Metrodome on Thursday.

Friday, April 23: White Bear Lake 7. Mounds View 2.  The Bears outperformed the Mustangs in all phases of the game - pitching, defense (1 error to the Mustangs 4) and at the plate.  They scored in 4 of the 7 innings to take away a resounding victory over the Mustangs.  The Mustangs were unable to execute at the plate; twice placing runners at second and third base with 0 outs - and producing only 1 run.  In the top of the first, leadoff hitter Kyle Mauricio led off with a base hit; Brett Becker followed with a drag bunt single, and along with some aggressive baserunning by Mauricio and Becker, the runners were at second and third.  The Mustangs were unable to capitalize on this, and the score remained 0-0 into the second inning.  In the 3rd, White Bear scored 2 runs to take a 2-0 lead.  In the bottom half of the 3rd, Matt Kruger and Mauricio produced hits that put them at second and third base.  Brett Becker executed an RBI ground ball with the infield back to score Kruger and make the score 2-1.  The Bears posted runs in the 4th and 6th innings, and 3 more in the 7th to put the game out of reach.  The Mustangs scored 1 in the bottom of the 7th when Nate Iliff walked and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Mauricio.  The Mustangs could only muster 4 hits on the day, and were not able to make adjustments to get to the Bears' junior pitcher Danny Thering - Thering  was in complete control but for the two 0 out rallies.  Thering struck out 7, and went the distance.  Matt Herringshaw started for the Mustangs, going 5 and 1/3, yielding 3 earned runs.  Jason Hagemann finished the game and yielded 3 earned runs.  The Bears hit the ball hard; with 9 hits and several hard hit outs.  The Mustangs travel to Irondale on Saturday.

Wednesday, April 21: East Ridge 7. Mounds View 6. Many baseball games are lost and not won; the Mustangs lost one of those disappointing games today at East Ridge.  Three of the Mustangs 6 errors on the day occurred in the bottom of the 6th allowing the Raptors to erase a 4 run deficit and tie the game at 6 apiece.  In the bottom of the 7th, the Raptors converted a lead-off walk into the game winner with a sacrifice bunt and a base hit to win the game 7-6.  Starting pitcher Tony Gazich deserved better; going 6 innings, scattering 6 hits and 2 walks, and allowing 2 earned runs.  Billy Turner finished up for the Mustangs on the mound.  The Mustangs built their 6-2 lead with 11 hits and some aggressive baserunning.  In the top of the 3rd, Matt Kruger got things started with a double, and Mauricio reached on an error.  Brett Becker knocked in the 2 baserunners with a single, and then scored on Gazich's double. In the top of the 5th, the Mustangs plated 3 more when Mauricio got things started with a hit and SB, Gazich singled home Mauricio, Robert Roman reached on a HBP, and back to back RBI singles by Nate Iliff and Eric Bradley scored 2 more runs.  Tony Gazich was 3 for 4 with a run scored and 2 RBI's, and Kyle Mauricio was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and a stolen base.  Austin Wikstrom made a couple of nice plays at 1B in the game to help the defensive cause.  The Mustangs host White Bear Lake on Friday.

Monday, April 19: Mounds View 1. Hastings 0.  The Mustangs prevailed in a pitcher's dual Monday at Hastings.  Nate Iliff pitched 6 outstanding innings to get the win, striking out 8 and walking 1.  Iliff was in total control, throwing 1st pitch strikes to 18 of the 23 batters faced. The Raiders threatened in the 4th inning, but Iliff worked out of a 1 out jam with 2 runners in scoring position.  Gerrit Schoener closed it out in the 7th; working through a 1 out jam with 2 runners on.  The Mustangs executed the plays in the field; committing no errors.  Hastings pitcher Nick Bachman also pitched very well, holding the Mustangs to 2 hits.  The Mustangs threatened in the 2nd and 4th innings but failed to score.  In the 5th, with 2 outs, Matt Kruger worked a HBP and stole 2B.  Lead-off hitter Kyle Mauricio tripled to drive in Kruger with what would be the winning run.  The Mustangs travel to face East Ridge on Wednesday; East Ridge is coached by former Mounds View Asst. Coach Brian Sprout.

Saturday, April 17.  Minnetonka 6. Mounds View 2.  The Mustangs opened the scoring in the top of the first by taking advantage of a Skipper error, and then executing offensively to score the run - Kyle Mauricio reached on an error, stole 2B, Brett Becker advanced him to 3B, and Tony Gazich's ground ball with the infield back scored Mauricio.  The Skippers responded with a 2-run HR in the bottom of the 1st to take a 2-1 lead.   Matt Kruger recorded his first varsity HR in the top of the 2nd to tie the score for the Mustangs.  The Skippers capitalized on a pair of Mustang errors in the 4th to put 4 runs on the board.  The Skippers held the Mustangs in check after that to win the game.  Sophomore Matt Herringshaw pitched well in his first varsity start, and Jason Hagemann and Tony Gazich yielded 0 earned runs in relief.  The Mustangs had serious threats to score more runs in the first 2 innings, but the Skippers were able to get out of the jams; and they held the Mustangs to 5 hits on the game.  The Mustangs played solid defense but for the one inning where they helped the Skippers put the 4 runs on the board.  As is usually the case, when one team scores 3 or more runs in an inning, they win the game.  The Mustangs travel to Hastings on Monday.

Friday, April 16: Woodbury 11. Mounds View 8.  The Mustangs had a frustrating day on the mound, walking 14 batters on the afternoon, a guaranteed formula for losing a baseball game.  Offensively, the Mustangs continued to produce some good early season productive at-bats.  Jay Porten was 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI, and Kyle Mauricio scored 3 runs.  Seven Mustangs produced a hit on the day.  The Mustangs travel to #2 rated Minnetonka on Saturday.

Thursday, April 15: Stillwater 7. Mounds View 6.  Stillwater jumped out to a 6-0 lead after 3 innings with 3 hits and aided by 7 walks and a couple defensive miscues.  The Mustangs rallied for 2 in the 4th with a Tony Gazich double, a HBP for Billy Turner; and a Brett Becker 2-out RBI single.  The Mustangs added 3 more in the 5th to close the score to 6-5 with a lead-off base hit from Kyle Mauricio, walks for Jay Porten and Tony Gazich, and RBI's for Turner and Becker.  In the 6th, the Mustangs tied the game when Mauricio led off with a single, Porten sacrificed him to 2B, and Gazich knocked in the tying run with a base hit.  Stillwater's Jeremy Gillard homered to RF in the bottom of the 6th to provide the margin of victory for the Ponies.  Offensively for the Mustangs, Mauricio was 3 for 3 with a walk, Becker was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI's and a sacrifice, and Gazich was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored, a walk and an RBI.  Nate Iliff, Jason Hagemann and Gerrit Schoener each worked 2 innings for the Mustangs on the mound.  The Mustangs host Woodbury on Friday.

April 12 - Mounds View 12, Roseville 5:  The Mustangs won their home opener.  The Mustangs stranded 6 runners in the first 2 innings, and the Raiders jumped out to a 3-0 lead.  In the bottom of the 3rd, the Raiders retired the first 2 Mustangs batters, and following Eric Bradley's double, the Raiders then helped the Mustangs with 4 consecutive free passes to help the Mustangs close the gap to 3-2 after 3 innings.  The Mustangs added another pair of runs in the 4th to take a 4-3 lead.  The Mustangs plated 8 in the 5th to take a commanding lead of 12-3.  The offense was led by Robert Roman (2-2, 1 Run, 2B, 2 BB's, and 4 RBI's) and Eric Bradley (2-3, 3 Runs, RBI).  Nine Mustangs crossed the plate, 7 players had hits, and the Mustangs worked the Raiders pitchers for 10 walks and 2 HBP's.  Tony Gazich started on the mound and went the first 3 innings, Matt Herringshaw worked 2 innings of scoreless pitching to earn the win, and Jay Porten completed the final 2 innings for the Mustangs - the pitchers walked only 2 for the game.  Nik Anderson was busy in the field, figuring in 8 put-outs and contributing in 2 double plays.  The Mustangs travel to Stillwater on Wednesday.
