2008 - Summer Fun At The Sandlot

BASEBALL FUN AT THE SANDLOT

Summer 2008

Open to all incoming 1st - 12th graders

6th - 12 Graders

The program is open to any student entering grades 6 - 12 interested in baseball, and is designed to enhance their baseball skills through repetition and instruction from Coach Downey in the summer.  It is geared toward the individual's capabilities, needs and interests.

The program runs concurrent with the Mounds View High School summer Weight Training program; thus those high school participants that are already at the High School can conveniently participate before or after the weight lifting as they choose.

The program is flexible - you show up on days that you want, when you want, and stay as long as you want.  The program offers instruction for those that want it, and unstructured activity for those that want that.  The program will provide batting cages, baseballs, batting tees, and other baseball instructional/training equipment.

Students can request instruction from Coach Downey on any aspect of baseball, take some swings, throw a pitching bullpen, field some balls, play Home Run Derby, play hotbox, play whiffle ball, or do whatever they want to do to get better or just have fun.

There is a 5000 Swings Club program (May - August).  Any student who is interested keeps track of his extra swings (those in addition to his structured baseball team activity) throughout the summer.  Well have a form they can use.  If he reaches 5000, he shows Coach Downey the form that he's used to count his swings each day, and Coach Downey will provide him with a Mustangs 5000 Swings T-shirt. Any extra swings count, not just those swings taken during this program.  The student doesn't have to be completed by July 31, they have through the month of August - Coach Downey will get them a T-shirt after that too.

(*** New This Year) Pitching: Structured Pitching instruction/workouts for those interested will be held on Tuesdays each week with Mounds View High School Pitching Coach Jon Nuss.  These pitching sessions will be geared toward pitching mechanics, specific pitch grips and delivery, pitching concepts, pick-offs, and the mental aspects.   We recognize that pitchers throw a lot in the summer - we will tailor these workouts so as not to impact the pitchers ability to throw that night, or recover properly from throwing the night before.

1st - 5th Graders

The program is open to any student entering grades 1 - 5 interested in baseball, and is designed to enhance their baseball skills and provide enjoyment with the game of baseball - through structured and supervised activity with an emphasis on fun.  The program is run by Mounds View High School Coach Mark Downey.

The program is similar to the Baseball Fun At The Sandlot Program for 6th - 12th grade students; it differs in that this program for the younger students will provide more structured activity each day.  Each day will provide some baseball drills to improve the student's skills, as well as finishing with a game of some kind.

The program is flexible - you show up on days that you want, when you want, and stay as long as you want.  The program will provide batting cages, baseballs, batting tees, and other baseball instructional/training equipment.
